“You're not for everybody. Be yourself, do your thing and your people will find you. I used to try to do the things everyone else was doing and it only made me feel underappreciated because I couldn't be a better them than they already were. Now I'm here, in my own zone, being the best me.”

“Even though society makes it seem like so, people who are in the spotlight are not more important than those who aren't. It doesn't mean they are more successful, neither does it make them superior human beings. They only operate in fields where more people get to see them while the others have the bliss and peace that comes with privacy.”

Grief 101
How do we take it when death steals from the future? A PR aide to Dr. Ubong King shares his grief story.

How do we handle grief?
Death is a thief and our joy could be one of the things it steals. And what's life like without joy? The header for this piece is a question that doesn't have a straight and direct answer as people and how they handle matters differ. Still, here is the experience of Tayo Alabi* and how he handled the death of his well known mentor and friend.

The beauty of human connection lies in the conversations we have. The people we relate with and how well we are able to express ourselves when we are around them.

Behind The Specs is that platform and march is that time!

we feel it, we speak it. Often times, things only become a lot more complex because we ‘let it slide’ or refuse to communicate how we feel. Especially when it involves people we care about.

However, this month and after it, we'll be honest and deliberate about communicating how we feel per time.

It's authenticity behind the specs, and outside it.

Hello there.

I just want to say hi.

And then share a few thoughts, of course.

And ask a few questions.

And then answer them myself.

So, here goes:

When last did you take bae to Mr. Biggs?

Or update your status on 2go?
I had a discussion with my dad some days ago. It was more like an argument, but the constructive type.

We talked about the transformation of the media and the overthrow of the Print media by blogs and e-spaces.
He does not believe the Print has been overthrown but I do.
And in my mind, I won the argument! 😂

How to try...
September was great. I loved how we were able to be grateful and open our hearts up to positivity. I also loved how we got to know each other more through the WhatsApp community's YOU Friday. I loved every minute of it and I appreciate Victor and Onyinyechi for making it happen.

And one of the reasons we did those was also to learn how to try. I've come to learn really that life is all about trying. Taking one step after another. Putting one foot in front of the other. Still, there is a way to try better.

It's important that we have a grateful heart while we try. In our trying journey, people will hurt us. Instead of dwelling in the hurt, we should forgive and keep trying. We will make mistakes while trying. Instead of dwell in its effects, we should forgive ourselves and keep trying.

Just keep trying, with a forgiving and grateful heart. One foot after another, in joy.

It is what it is

I have trained myself in the past few months to accept reality more than I ever have. When I face an issue, I tell myself that 'this issue is real and I have to find a real solution to it.'

When I'm happy, the happiness is real. When things go south, they really have gone south. When somebody loves me, they really do love me. When I lose a friend, I really have lost a friend.

When we know what really is and what really is not, we know the next step to take and the available options of choices to make. Do not waste time building castles in the air or wishing for things to be.

It is what it is.

What I learnt

So instead of wait for them to reach out to me, I decided to send them an email. The email contained my profile, links to my handles and some PDFs of my works. It really didn't seem like a sensible thing to do, but I thought about the possible risks. What would I have lost by doing it? Absolutely nothing!

Try. Even when it seems foolish, try. Especially when there's nothing to lose if you try. I do it all the time and it has gotten me to places that I never dreamt I would be at. Just like it got me into the media house (yes, they replied my email with some questions and eventually signed me on).

So, dear friend, try.

We also encourage y'all our friends, please try.

We have come to the end our our gratitude journal for he month of September.

We will have another one soon, stay tuned.
