Sunday Art day: Kungoni Center of Culture and Arts

The Kungoni Centre of Culture & Art, located at Mua Mission in Malawi’s Central region, was established in 1976. It is recognized as a place where the richness of Malawi’s cultural heritage can be encountered and preserved. Fr Claude Boucher Chisale, founder and a priest of the Missionaries of Africa, has spent many years documenting various aspects of Malawian culture. The richness of this research has been presented in such a way as to allow people to appreciate and learn from the wisdom of generations of Malawian people

We want to give our visitors experiences of encounter where we all learn

Mother’s day in Malawi

On this day, October 15th, it is Mother’s day in Malawi. It is the only Mother’s day in the world celebrated on this day and observed on the International day of rural Women. Malawi is among the very few countries in the world making Mother’s day a public holiday.
It is a day wrapped in love, in gratitude, in the whispers of “zikomo, mai” -thank you, mother.

Across the hills and plains, from the misty tea estates of Mulanje to the shimmering waters of Lake Malawi, the spirit of the Malawian mother beats strong, steady as the rhythm of the drum, tender as the sunrise over the Shire River.

To every Mother in Malawi or abroad:

You are the soul of this nation, the warmth in the “Warm Heart of Africa.”
Through your love, Malawi stands tall.
Through your sacrifices, we thrive.
Through your stories, we remember who we are.

Today we say, zikomo kwambiri, mai.
You are our first home, our first love, our forever song.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers who make the world gentle and strong, this day, and every day, we celebrate you!

Sunday Art day: Lily Crux Poems

Lily Crux Tay started writing poems since 2020. Her poems mostly focuses on what happens in real life like “Corona Virus” and “Vaccine” and the challenge that brought to most countries. So far 16 poems and counting .with “Freedom fighter” as most respected because it is about how fellow Malawians brought freedom in Malawi:

He was a man

Of favoured energy

Whose speech delivered

Like strong wind

A successful goals

In the violent game

Of torturing life

Worthy to be saluted

Boldness as secret motto

He hit the fullness

Of devouring fire from mouth

Arrows of the voices transplanted

Heaven shield scattering enemies

He firmly transplanted young heart

On the lip burning illegal Thangata system

With intoxicating speech

He firmly stuck in

Despite floods of warning

Who made him dead to rapture

Add to the list of Independence

Nature Saturday: Nyika National Park

Nyika National Park is the first (1965) and largest Park in Malawi. Most parts lie about 2 000 metres above sea level. The plateau is perfect for hiking, mountain biking, unconventional 4 x 4 drives, game drives and horseback safaris, as well as walks through the long grass. Fishing (catch and release) can also be done.

The park covers practically most (3000 km2) of the Nyika Plateau in northern Malawi, about 480 km north of Lilongwe and 60 km north of Rumphi by road. Access is by a single dirt road which branches north off the road from Rumphi to the Katumbi border post, and winds its way up the south-western scarp of the plateau, continues over the top, where it forms the border with Zambia (where Nyika continues), then descends the north-west scarp in a series of bends, and continues north to the Chisenga border post. On the top of the plateau, a spur goes east to Chelinda, the only setlement where you can find the headquarters of the park. There is no access from the eastern side.

The name Nyika means “where the water comes from” as the plateau’s elevation makes it wetter than surrounding areas. Other suggested meanings are “wilderness” and “short grassland”. The top is Nganda Peak (2605 m) and is frequently in cloud, both in the rainy season and in the cold dry season when dense fogs, called Chiperoni, may persist well into the morning and sometimes all day. The persistent moisture brings over 200 types of orchid into flower, the highest concentration in south east Africa. The grasslands of Nyika are rich in wildflowers all through the year but especially from January to April during the rains.

On the high plateau you can find Zebra , bushbucks, reebucks, warthogs, large numbers of antilope and it is reputed to have the highest concentration of Leopard in Central Africa. Elephant and bufallo live on the lower ground; however this area is not easily accessible. On night drives various animals can be seen, including Hyena, Jackal and Owls or maybe even Leopards. 400 species of bird have been recorded in Nyika.
