Held in the relaxed atmosphere of Joie Davidow's spacious Rome apartment atop the Janiculum Hill, or under a shady umbrella in her garden, these intimate workshops, limited to six participants, are tailored to improve the skills and unlock the creativity of published authors and beginning writers alike. In a series of supportive sessions, participants, who will be encouraged to read pages of their

own work, will receive constructive criticism and encouragement. We'll read excerpts of the work of great authors, analyzing them to discover the techniques that make them wonderful, learning how to apply these lessons in our own writing. Instructor Joie Davidow will lead you through the process of finding an idea, writing a first draft, self-editing and rewriting, with focus on clarity and structure, finding a distinctive voice, grabbing and holding the reader's attention. This is a chance to strengthen your writing abilities under the guidance of an award-winning professional, who has been a full-time editor, journalist and author for the past thirty years. Whether you are finishing a novel or just want to improve your written presentations, you will benefit from these enjoyable sessions, where the philosophy is to avoid the academic, eschewing "rules" of writing, and focusing on the particular talents of each individual. The series of eight weekly sessions, each lasting two hours, with breaks for coffee or a glass of wine,
are scheduled on Saturday mornings or weekday evenings. Fees: Eight sessions €120
Next series: Wednesday evenings, 6:30-8:30 pm, January 26 - March 16
Saturday mornings, 10:30 am -12:30 pm, January 29 - March 19

"I’m an Olympic-standard eavesdropper. I also seem to have kind of a trusting face because people come to me all the time on trains and planes and boats and start unloading the craziest most glorious stuff that you could never make up. What I do a lot as well is I look at the way people are speaking. Watching them as they speak is very interesting because often, in fiction, dialogue on the page looks like two people taking turns, but it’s never like that in life: in life, there’s always a talker and a listener."
Kevin Barry, whose novel, "Night Boat to Tangier," was longlisted for the 2019 Booker Prize.

Alexander Chee on writer's block:
The idea of the fraudulent idea, the idea that you are tricking yourself into humiliating yourself, and that stopping yourself from writing is the only way to protect yourself, this is a potent source of writers’ block. You begin with the fear of humiliating yourself, which takes you to the fear of losing the love of someone you care about who might read it and who you fear will think less of you, or even punish you, even end the relationship. From there we move to the fear of failing to achieve, which is a shadow to the fear of success, which brings us back around to the fear of your own ideas.
