A Kino Kabaret is a collaborative filmmaking event, where filmmakers from around the world (writers, actors, DOPs, sound designers, editors, dancers, technicians, costume designers, scenographers, make-up artists, musicians, film lovers…) meet in one place, the Kino Lab, and create short movies in sessions generally of 48/72 hours.
“Whaaaat?” True story. At the beginning of eac
h new session, anyone who wants to make a short film can present his/her idea to the group. (S)he describes the outlines of the story and the cast/crew/gear needed to shoot it, more or less like this:
“I’d like to make a David Lynch kinda thing, but without dwarfs… purple… I need 2 actors, a DOP, a sound guy, a horse and an inflatable armchair.”
It’s not a joke. When all the films have been presented, people gather spontaneously into mini-crews and start shooting their films. Actors think they’re superheroes and sign up for 15 different projects; directors shamelessly lie to their cast & crew “Don’t worry I don’t need a script, I’ve got it all in my head”; costume designers find out they’re amazing dancers and sound designers find out they’re natural born actors; somewhere in a corner someone is painting somebody else blue. “Uh?” I’m not sh*tting you. People gulp down gallons of coffee to get through the nigh. Suddenly it’s 48 hours later, you have a beard, you stink and you’ve got your laptop keyboard printed on your face. Somebody shouts through a megaphone:
“Export your films now! Projection starts in one hour!”
There’s no time to even scan through your film and check your edit. You download some random piece of music from CreativeCommons and wack it on your timeline, you stick the Kino Palermo logo at the end, click export and give your file to the man. Go grab yourself a beer. The films are screened in pubblic. You’ve left 45 seconds of black at the beginning, but what the hell, it’s your first film and guess what? You wrote it, shot it and edited it in 48 hours!!! Go grab yourself another beer. You eat some pizza, check out the cute sound designer at the bar, drink beer, exchange opinions about the screening.
“Wow, you’re film was f**king cool! Especially the dwarf, brilliant!”
“What dwarf?”
You go to bed, try to catch a couple of hours sleep, extremely proud and a bit drunk. Not too drunk though, ‘cause next morning you’re back at the Kino Lab ready for another session! Kino Kabarets are non competitive. We shoot films cause we love doing it, collaborating with crazy people from around the world, sharing and learning new skills, taking risks. Limitations of time, budget and resources are not obstacles, but an opportunity for creativity, collaboration and experimentation. Kino Palermo will have 3 sessions:
-2 of 48 hours with outdoor screening in the evening.
-1 of 72 hours with outdoor screening in the evening with concerts. Do well with nothing, do better with little, but do it now!

Un Kino Kabaret è un evento, in genere di una settimana in cui filmmakers da tutto il mondo (scrittori, attori, registi, dop, sound designers, montatori, ballerini, tecnici, costumisti, scenografi, make-up artists, musicisti, appassionati di cinema...) si incontrano in un luogo, il Kino Lab, e girano cortometraggi in tempi brevi, di solito round (session) di 48/72 ore. "Cosaaaaa?" Giuro. All’inizio di ogni round chiunque voglia realizzare un cortometraggio lo presenta al gruppo descrivendone il soggetto e indicando cast artistico/tecnico ed attrezzature di cui ha bisogno, più o meno così:
"Vorrei fare qualcosa alla David Lynch, ma senza nani... tutto fucsia... Mi servirebbero 2 attori, un dop, un tecnico del suono, un cavallo ed una poltrona gonfiabile." Non è uno scherzo. Quando tutti hanno finito si formano spontaneamente delle mini-troupe che iniziano a girare i loro corti. Gli attori credono di essere dei supereroi e prendono impegni per 15 film; i registi mentono spudoratamente "Non preoccuparti, non mi serve la sceneggiatura, ho tutto in testa"; i costumisti si scoprono sound designer e i sound designers attori; qualcuno in un angolo dipinge qualcun altro di blu. "Uh?" Credimi. Poi si torna al Kino Lab e si iniziano a montare i film. Si bevono litrate di caffè per rimanere svegli tutta la notte. A un certo punto non sai come sono passate 48 ore, tu hai la barba, puzzi e hai stampata in faccia la tastiera del laptop. Qualcuno in un megafono grida:
"Esportate i film, la proiezione è tra un'ora!"
Non hai tempo di riguardare il tuo corto. Scarichi una musica a c@zzo da CreativeCommons, ce la sbatti sopra, metti il logo di Kino Palermo, esporti e consegni il file a chi di dovere. Ti meriti una birra. I film vengono proiettati in pubblico. Hai lasciato 45 secondi di nero all'inizio, ma chisenefrega, è il tuo primo corto e poi c , l'hai scritto, girato e montato in 48 ore!!! Ti meriti un'altra birra. Si sta insieme, si beve birra, si scambiano opinioni sui film visti
"Wow, fighissimo il tuo film! Soprattutto il nano, geniale!"
"Quale nano?"
Si va a dormire soddisfatti e un pò ubriachi, ma non troppo che la mattina dopo si ricomincia. Il Kino Kabaret non è una competizione. Si girano i corti per il piacere di farlo, per stare insieme, per imparare, per rischiare. I vincoli di tempo, di budget e di risorse non sono limiti, ma stimoli alla creatività alla collaborazione, alla sperimentazione. Kino Palermo sarà divisa in 2 sessions:
-2 di 48 ore con screening fuori di notte.
-1 di 72 ore con screening fuori di notte con concerti. "Fai bene con niente, fai meglio con poco, ma fallo adesso!" (motto del Kino Movement)
