-Passion and alcohol can often lead to unexpected surprises. And so it was for the two of us. We were sitting on a stained red ‘love’ seat at a cafe in Bandra, our beer glass sweating deliciously, talking about weddings. Our best friend was on the cusp of losing her surname, and we were left wondering, “What do we do?”
I was reaching for my glass of sure-shot solution when m
y phone rang. It was the fourth member in our Carrie Bradshaw gang, the one who left us in this sweltering heat to enjoy the fashionable New York. “Hey, I can’t make it. I feel so terrible… can’t believe it. I want to see her mehendi hands, dance in her sangeet, set her dupatta right, tease her fiance, fix her hair and just be there…”
I hung up to realise my ever-thirsty friend had chugged down my drink. There was a Corona-induced twinkle in her eyes. She grabbed my hand and said, “I have an idea.” After 4 hours, we had the perfect wedding gift. Thus was born, ‘The Wedding Crashers’. Overnight, a Facebook account, a Twitter account and a blog came into existence. The two of us attacked our friend’s wedding with a vengeance. We kept updating and posting until our fingers went numb. Pictures were clicked and uploaded instantly. We got a sneak-peak into the entire madness - the last minute dress alteration, the grandmother’s silent blessings, the drunk uncle who couldn’t stop dancing, the desperate need for a safety pin - we saw it all. And so did her friends, live and from every corner of the world. Our gift was to make it even more beautiful and memorable. Our gift was to make this wonderful couple an envy of all others. Our gift was to those who couldn’t make it. “Girl, I felt I was there…”, came the response from Obama-land. A couple of days later, we were digging into prawn souffles and the phone rang again. “Hey, I was wondering if you guys could help us out with my upcoming wedding.” I raised my eyebrow at my friend, she winked, and we have never looked back.
