Modelled on the Oxford Union Debates, the NLS Student Bar Debate (known for 7 editions as the NLS Union Debates), involve hosting lectures followed by topical debates at least twice a year on contemporary issues affecting our lives. So far, we have successfully hosted seven editions of the Debate, which have focused on a wide array of interesting areas such as hunger strikes, legislative oversight

over intelligence agencies, politicization of academic syllabuses, intellectual property rights in the context of the DU copyrights case, ethics in the armed forces, the role of the media and judicial appointments in India. Santosh Hegde, the former Lokayukta of Karnataka; Dr. Chandan Mitra, Member of Parliament and the chief editor of the Pioneer; Lt. Satish Nambiar PVSM AVSM VRC (Retd.); Member, Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses, former Force Commander and Head of Mission of the United Nations Protection Force in Yugoslavia; Mr. Jacob Applebaum, who is a core member of the ‘Tor’ project and had collaborated with Wikileaks and Mr. Julian Assange on a number of occasions; Mr. Veera Raghav, Senior Editor, CNN IBN; Professor G. Hargopal, an academic, renowned human rights activists and former Political Science Professor at the Central University of Hyderabad; Mr. Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, a journalist who has been employed with various media organizations including companies bringing out publications such as Business India, Business World, The Telegraph, India Today and The Pioneer; Mr. Ram Jethmalani, who is a Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) and Senior Advocate in Supreme Court of India; Mr. Raju Ramachandran, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India; Professor VS Mallar, Professor of Constitutional Law, NLSIU and Professor Sudhir Krishnaswamy, an alumnus of NLSIU and Professor of Law at Azim Premji University, Bangalore.
