πŸ₯”πŸ» β€” Original Pub Snacks! 🍻πŸ₯”

This week, we uncovered two little pieces of Irish crisp history here in Carty's Bar & Lounge - Knock β€” and they got us feeling all nostalgic! ❀️

πŸ‘‘ KING CRISPS πŸ‘‘

This classic orange King Crisps bag is likely from the late 1970s, costing just 7p! πŸͺ™ The ingredients list was wonderfully simple:
πŸ₯” Potatoes
🌻 Edible vegetable oil
✨ Flavouring

And a suggestion to try their peanuts and popcorn! πŸ₯œπŸΏ

πŸ₯” GOLDEN TAYTO πŸ₯”

This Tayto bag is likely from the 1980s, costing just 12p, weighing in at 26g and proudly declaring itself the β€œIDEAL TV SNACK.” πŸ“ΊπŸ˜‚

And just look at that five-digit telephone number! ☎️ Remember when phone numbers were that short? 😍 Remember when you could actually remember everyone’s number? πŸ˜‚

πŸ“¦ Look at the difference between then and now… Back then, a crisp packet basically needed:
πŸ₯” A logo
🌢️ The flavour
πŸ’° The price
✨ And a promise of freshness!

Nowadays, your humble bag of crisps comes with:
🧾 Ingredients
⚠️ Allergens
πŸ“Š Nutritional information
♻️ Recycling details
πŸ”Ž And enough small print to require a magnifying glass! πŸ˜‚

And those prices… 7p and 12p! 😳πŸͺ™ We can’t quite promise 1970s prices… but thankfully, our snack offering is still pretty mighty! πŸ˜‹πŸ» And yes… Tayto is still on offer! πŸ₯”πŸ’š

Fancy a little snack? Choose from
πŸ₯” Tayto Cheese & Onion, Keogh's Guinness & Flame Grilled Beef, Atlantic Sea Salt & Balsamic Vinegar or Sweet Chilli crisps
πŸ₯œ Nobby's Sweet Chilli or KP Salted nuts
πŸ₯“ Smith's Bacon Fries
🍫 Cadbury's Purple Snack

What was your favourite childhood treat to have with your bottle of pop? πŸ₯€πŸ₯”πŸ«

And how do YOU share your crisps? 🀝 Bag torn wide open on the table β€” everyone help yourself! πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ Or held firmly in your own hand, carefully guarding every last crisp without crushing them! πŸ˜‚

No judgement here… Although we may be watching. πŸ‘€πŸ€£

- Keeper of Carty's Stories 🦌

Watching proudly over the Front Bar in Carty's for over half a century, our famous stag's head has been a familiar face to generations β€” and a silent witness to countless stories of its own πŸ“œπŸ•°

Recently, Bert Dennedy recalled a story he was told in the 1960s, when he came to Knock as a sergeant, about how the stag came to take its place behind the bar ☺️

Back then, shooting outings were a familiar part of rural life, and Frank, John and Martin Conboy, along with Jim Carty, Paddy Joe Healy and others, were often part of those outings together πŸ•

On one such occasion in Ballinrobe, a stag was spotted β€” and with Paddy Joe Healy's gun at hand, John shone the light, while Frank, steadying himself on Martin's back, took the shot. In time, the stag made its way back to Carty's, where it has remained ever since 🎯

The keeper of spare keys, holder of holiday souvenirs, a home for signed dollar bills and countless little mementoes β€” each with a story of its own - much has happened beneath those antlers over the decades ✨️

Regularly dressed up for the occasion β€” shamrock sunglasses, Easter bunny ears, Christmas baubles and a mini Sam Maguire - it's become a bit of a celeb itself! 🀩

And recently, the stag witnessed another memorable chapter in Carty's history β€” the Sam Maguire Cup being lifted in the Front Bar! πŸ†

Generations have come and gone beneath its watchful gaze β€” conversations, celebrations, reunions, victories, homecomings and countless evenings shared in its company. Faces have changed, Carty's has evolved, but the stories continue πŸ₯°

It has become part of the fabric of Carty's β€” and a small piece of the history shared by everyone who has crossed its path πŸ’«

Have you any memories β€” or photos! πŸ“Έ β€” of the stag over the years? We'd love to hear them in the comments πŸ“

β€” Knock’s Tug-of-War Champions! πŸ†πŸͺ’πŸ’ͺ

Here’s a fantastic piece of Knock history for this week’s Throwback Thursday β€” the victorious Knock Tug-of-War Team of 1940! πŸ“Έβœ¨

This wonderful photograph was kindly given to us by John and Rita Flatley πŸ™β€” a huge thank you to them for bringing these special pieces of Knock history home from London and allowing us to share them with the community ❀️☺️

πŸ‘€ Do you recognise any of these faces or names?

πŸ“Έ L-R: Martin Curry, Jack Burke, Paddy Kilduff, Brian Egan (Captain), Jim Flatley, Hugh Carney, James Sloyan, John Flatley and Paddy O’Brian.

The team competed at the Ballyhaunis Augustinian Pattern Revival in September 1940. An estimated 6,000 people travelled to the town by foot, bicycle and car πŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈπŸš²πŸš— for a fantastic day of sport, music, singing and dancing πŸŽΆπŸŽ€πŸ’ƒπŸ•Ί

And the tug-of-war was described by the Connaught Telegraph as one of the highlights of the day! πŸͺ’πŸ”₯

πŸ’ͺ Ten teams entered the competition, including two teams from Knock.

πŸ₯‡ Knock No. 1 β€” the team pictured here β€” first overcame Knock No. 2, before defeating Granlahan. Then came the final against Coolnafarna… and Knock pulled out the win! πŸ†πŸŽ‰πŸ™Œ

Captain Brian Egan was presented with the cup πŸ† and each member received a medal πŸ₯‡ Not a bad day’s work at all! πŸ‘πŸ˜„

We’re delighted to be able to preserve these memories at Carty's Bar & Lounge - Knock β€οΈπŸ“š, and this fantastic photograph will be going up on the wall soon πŸ–ΌοΈ

We’ve got a number of new pictures waiting to be displayed, so keep an eye out! πŸ‘€πŸ“Έ And there’s another photograph from John’s collection coming in a future throwback post… πŸ•°οΈβœ¨

πŸ’ Do you remember the Patterns or other local festivals?

πŸŽͺ What did you most look forward to?
πŸ† Did you ever win a trophy, medal or competition?
πŸ“Έ Do you have any old photographs or memories you’d like to share?
