Kalo Mina 🌕

May has arrived along with the full moon and a weekend of cooler weather and cloudy skies. The trickle of tourists has brought the island a slow and steady bit of business to kick off the season as well as a bit of calm after the Easter commotion.

As most of you know, The Pirate Bar is an old soul. Much of the decor and styling has remained the same over the years, holding a nostalgic feeling for those who return to see the familiar artwork, original signage, and memorabilia on display.

Our barista has been with us for many years and here he has shared his photographic eye of detail with this collection of photos for you all to enjoy!

Our cozy corner of the world is waking up with quite a few unexpected tourists wandering our uneven stone streets as locals busily prepare for the season ahead.

Last week marked the annual celebration of Greece’s Independence, followed by the sailboat race—bringing familiar skippers and crew members ashore to party for a couple of nights. And before that, the island burst into Carnival (Απόκριες) fun, with parades showcasing a host of creative costumes.

Just up ahead, we have Hydra’s Trail Event, coinciding with Catholic Easter, followed by Orthodox Pascha the week after.

And all this comes after Hollywood spent a few weeks on Hydra. Whispers of “Brad Pitt” could be heard, with many hoping to catch a glimpse during filming in all the most familiar places. It brought a touch of winter excitement to our slow-paced island—and it’s always fun to see our everyday streets up on the big screen.

While these months may be much quieter than the hotter days most visitors know so well, they are far from boring. And soon, the Easter madness will come washing over us like a wild wave.

So we brace ourselves—summer is on its way.

Hello friends near and far. The 2025 season is coming to an end and it was a busy one for all on our charming rocky island. The recent heavy rains have awakened the grounds with hillsides transforming to vibrant green slopes and unexpected flowers sprouting out of cobblestone cracks along the walkways.

There is something glorious about this time of year and it's not just the much needed promise of repose right around the corner, but the shift of seasons which brings a refreshing change of atmosphere to those of us who live here year round.

Many business doors have already shut and this weekend more will follow suit after the SwimRun race. A break is needed and well deserved to all those who have worked the full season tirelessly as Hydra welcomed a continuous stream of visitors. We thank you all for the support and friendly energy you brought along to our little corner of the world. Efharisto poli 🖤

We look forward to seeing you all in the years to come!!

Summer is now in full swing with the eventful June soon behind us. It has been both busy and beautiful as people came to our bar to celebrate birthdays, art events, and sometimes just the simple joy of being alive in our safe and happy corner of the world.

Kindness and appreciation circulates between business owners, workers, and the guests being served as we dance through the rushes of hot summer days on Hydra. The difficult moments (blackouts, tech crashes, staffing troubles) come and go however a calm breath and feeling of gratitude eventually overcome those bumps during the busiest and most trying hours (when patience from all is greatly appreciated)!

Now we are whirling our way into July, hopefully sans power outages and with only good times with friends and family to lead the way!

Hello friends and Kalo Mina!

It is April and the island is now mostly set up for the upcoming season which will be in full swing come the middle of April when Orthodox Easter will coincide with Catholic Easter- so brace yourselves for a big crowd if you plan to be around that week.

We are currently enjoying mild weather with cascading wildflowers pouring down the cliff sides into the turquoise seas. Fields of yellow and green are sprinkled with tiny clusters of purples, pinks and reds upon closer observation with happy bees buzzing in and out of the delicate puffs of pollen as they do their important work.

Many of you have already booked tickets for your upcoming visits (yay!) and with the current state of the world, it is of the utmost importance to bring ourselves inner peace with daily enjoyments, both big and small- and we can probably all agree that Hydra is a place which nourishes the soul. See many of you soon!

The winter months of Hydra offer a time for local workers to enjoy a slower pace of life. The break is necessary to re-energize for the season ahead, when the speed dial will be turned up with increasing momentum as the focus turns outward toward productivity and hospitality. For now the lives of this pleasant little community revolve around kids, lazy long walks, and local events with friendly faces to greet around every cobblestone corner.

The builders of Hydra, however, are not sitting around idly. Reconstruction and renovations are being carried out all around- with even the Jeff Koons sun, crowning the Slaughterhouse building, currently benefiting from some form of maintenance. Preparations are happening for the tourist season ahead!

The Hydra winter weather gifts us year-round islanders a different atmospheric vibe each and every day. In the evening the skies shift into unique cloud formations- some days with wispy pastels and others a cozy grey blanket layered between earth and the heavens. Many of us relish those rare moody days to be wonderfully lazy and embrace the calm these months offer us.

On occasion we’ve welcomed rain including a few very heavy downpours which have soaked the buried seeds- eventually releasing wildflowers of all colors and horta (wild greens) to nourish those who choose to forage and cook it. The transformation from dry and dusty to green and lush is always a true joy to witness. And still the scattered presence of windless sunny days tempt those of us who dare to dive into the waters for a biting yet invigorating winter swim- an event that is never regretted!

The past couple days have brought a resurgence of business to the island, so it's safe to assume that October is not going to be the quiet month of a decade ago- especially since a countless number of you have already shared your excitement of trips planned, returning to see us in the weeks ahead!

October is a month which is proving to be a favorite for the many who are able to take a leave of absence from work/school to come and enjoy the warmth that Greece offers while back home the temperatures in many locations are dropping significantly, signaling the approaching winter.

Here on Hydra, we may get a few gusty days of wind, passing clouds, and perhaps a rainstorm (if we are lucky), but most would agree that the weather is still gorgeous for swimming and sunning on a warm rock with a good book in hand.

We host a wonderful and colorful array of characters at The Pirate Bar. Thought provoking and thoughtfully dressed, we are often graced with life enhancing personalities who amplify our already beautiful lives with their often subtle and sometimes in-your-face messages of living well.

Here is a particularly fun one:
“PLAY TECHNO AT MY FUNERAL”

And if not techno, at least play some sort of music because music can be helpful if not essential in moments of celebration and in healing.

Life is to be lived in positivity and in joy- each and every day. Even if it means turning on the speakers and blasting a bit of dance/ electric/ techno/ metal/ classical/ reggae, or whatever moves you to live in the present moment... from now until the day you die- and for the celebration thereafter!

📸 Full credit to for capturing the message in the moment 🏴‍☠️

Hello September!

We have left August behind in the midst of changing weather as the clouds have come tumbling in, teasing us with the possibility of rain- and we did get a bit of a spring sprinkle at least!

As many of you have noticed, this year we welcomed a largely new crew to our Pirate team. Training new (especially the young and inexperienced) members the ways of our work was a big part of this year's tasks for us, but we pulled together thanks to this great group of individuals.

Here are a few photos taken throughout the season of our hardworking and competent crew. Even our newest family member, Alma, has had an important role to play- bringing a bit of relief by way of adorable smiles to the crew when we needed it most during the most difficult and tiring days.

Kalo Mina!

* I did not manage to capture a face photo of every member of this year's crew, but those of you who have come this year already know the individuals well. Thanks to for a few of the group photos taken earlier in the season.
