6 years ago today we got the news that broke our hearts in to tiny pieces . On July 1st 2019, my big sister Sara lost her life in a tragedy at sea whilst sailing off the coast of South Africa to Madagascar.

Sara was such a light in so many peoples lives and the impact of her loss was profound. I miss my beautiful big sister more than words can describe.

However, the support shown for the SK Ocean Task Force is testimony to my amazing sister. I cannot believe that my best friend, the person who always understood me has gone. Life is not the same, but I hope that we are making her proud and that she feels the pure admiration there is for her down here.

I am very proud to now share that Sara’s name has been engraved on the , Sentinals of the Sea wall along with information about her amazing work in their book of memories.

Sentinels of the sea is a group of individuals whose legacy is protecting the ocean – SAS have a Sentinels of the Sea plaque in their office, as a reminder of those who are continuing to fight for the ocean long into the future. It’s their beautiful way of honouring them, their love of the ocean, and their ongoing legacy.

SAS shared a very special message for SK on her birthday yesterday ,

“Today, we want to mark and celebrate the life and legacy of a remarkable individual - Sara King. Sara dedicated her career and much of her life to the preservation of oceans and coastlines in several countries, from working with coastal communities around the world, to embarking on a transatlantic voyage to expose the scale of plastic pollution, Sara lived with contagious energy, deep purpose, and an unshakeable belief that people working together can change the world.

Today, on what would have been Sara’s 40th birthday, her sister Kirsty is organising beach cleans and fundraising for SAS, carrying on the fight against plastic pollution that Sara believed in so deeply. We’re deeply saddened by Sara’s story, but we’re honoured to be a part of her ocean-saving legacy. In our office, a plaque and a book of memories in their name stand as daily reminders of those who continue to fight for the ocean, long into the future.”

Happy birthday babe ! We hope you love your new memorial beach clean station sporting your amazing SKOTF plaque . I know you will love it’s location and stunning views of Summerleaze beach in Cornwall .

Thank you to the amazing team at for making this happen for her birthday 💛🐳 please check out out their pages for further information on this amazing ocean conservation charity !

The team at the 2 minute shared these beautiful words about Sara and her new station today-

“ Today would have been Sara King’s birthday. Her amazing family bought a Station in her memory and to raise awareness of her legacy, The Sara King Task Force. We cannot express our gratitude enough to them for raising over £4000 for The 2 Minute Foundation over the past three years, providing vital support to our work and also providing Stations for the community to use for years to come.

Sara’s Station has just been relocated to Life's A Beach café which overlooks Summerleaze beach in time for her birthday. This is a really beautiful spot that is both popular and useful for beach-goers to have litter picking tools at hand. It will be looked after by The 2 Minute Beach School to ensure that it is stocked with pickers and reusable bags throughout the year.

We'd love for you to join us today to send all of our love and well wishes on this special occasion 💙 “

Happy 40th birthday to my amazing, funny , passionate beautiful big sister Sara King

There are no words that can sum up the immense pain and heartache that we feel every single day since the day we lost you . However , when your birthday falls it is you I feel for the most , you had so many goals in life and I know you would have strived to reach them all.

You were the best aunty and sister . We are so very proud of you and all you achieved in life . I hope somehow you can feel the love and admiration there is for you down here .

Anyone who knew Sara knew her spark. Her energy was infectious. She had such passion for those she loved and the wonders of our natural world - especially our oceans. She dedicated her career and much of her personal time to the preservation of oceans and coastlines in several countries, often working with local communities in these areas, to educate and empower them to do the same.

You have inspired so many people to get involved in whatever way they can babe and in your memory you have helped to raise and amazing £4,388 for the and currently £821 for , (SAS) two amazing ocean saving charities that were close to your heart. Furthermore , you have continued to motivate people to get involved in numerous beach clean ups .

For Sara’s birthday we are inviting people to make a small donation to SAS (between £2 - £5, the cost of a card or a drink that you maybe have bought her if she were here with us) Sara loved this ocean conservation charity and the amazing work they do .

On the lead up to what would have been my amazing big sister’s 40th birthday and 6 years since the day we lost the most beautiful soul. I thought it would be an apt time to re share some of SK’s amazing work in the fight against plastic pollution in our oceans.

My dad and Sara had learnt to dive together in Australia and the Red Sea, and this had been a spark for Sara’s interest in the oceans. After completing a degree in Zoology at Leeds University, she travelled the world through her work in international development and conservation. Her final move was to South Africa, a place she instantly fell in love with. It was here she met several people who inspired her to take on her own projects, and from here that she set off across the South Atlantic Ocean to record the presence of microplastics.

Sara was working in South Africa because she believed in the value of the projects she engaged with. She worked closely with Cape Radd, a marine field station that serves as a platform for researchers in Cape Town, which runs a range of educational citizen science days and courses for ocean enthusiasts. The team are passionate about marine conservation and educating others through snorkelling and diving experiences, theoretical workshops and much more.

Sara’s work collecting plastic particles on South African beaches was also published in Dr Holly Nel’s research paper. Dr Nel shared the following words :

“Sara believed that hands on research and data collection should not only be done by those in academia, government and industry; but that active citizen and the dedicated youth also had a role to play. This she believed could be done by coming together in our shared love of nature - to create research projects that allowed citizens and scholars the opportunity to be a part of the story.”

Sara continues to inspire people to this day , via the , who have encouraged people each year to take part in beach clean ups and have also raised an incredible £5,338 for 2 minute and so far £766 for SAS, two charities who undertake amazing work in the fight against plastic pollution in our oceans.

Five years ago today I got the call that shattered my heart in to tiny pieces. On July 1st 2019, my big sister Sara lost her life in a tragedy at sea whilst sailing off the coast of South Africa to Madagascar.

Sara was an absolute light in everyone’s life. She had a beautiful soul, and her passion, energy and thirst for life inspired everyone around her. We are absolutely devastated by this loss.

As years go by , the shock fades and the reality sets in that our amazing Sara is not coming back , and the pain that we live with every day intensifies .

However, the support shown for the SK Ocean Task Force is testimony to my amazing sister. I cannot believe that my best friend, the person who always understood me has gone. Life is not the same, but I hope that we are making her proud and that she feels the pure admiration there is for her down here.

The first few years the funds raised via the SKOTF were donated to the . ( an amazing 4,338 of our initial £4,120 target )This year to spread the love we are fundraising for , another charity that was close to Sara’s heart.

For Sara’s birthday and on her anniversary we are inviting people to make a small donation (between £2 - £5, the cost of a card or a drink that you maybe have bought her if she were here with us)

We continue to also encourage people to carry out their beach / street cleans and tag us in their pictures with the hashtag

Happy 39th birthday to my beautiful big sister .

There are no words that can sum up the pain and heartache that we feel every single day since the day we lost you and things will never be the same . However , when your birthday falls it is you I feel for the most , you had so many goals in life and I know you would have strived to reach them all.

She has inspired so many people to get involved in whatever way they can. In that spirit we endeavour to continue some of this work in her honour - for the past 3 summers we have raised 4338 pounds of our initial target of 4120 pounds.

The first few years the funds raised were donated to the Two Minute Foundations . This year to spread the love we are fundraising for , another charity that was close to Sara’s heart.

For Sara’s birthday we are inviting people to make a small donation (between £2 - £5, the cost of a card or a drink that you maybe have bought her if she were here with us)

Last night we walked to Sara’s memorial bench here in Kommetjie.

A beautiful spot to sit and remember a beautiful soul . This was one of Sara’s favourite places and I know she would be so happy to have a bench here in South Africa ( like the one in south Devon) where all the people who loved her could sit and reminisce.

We sat and had a glass of Sara’s favourite wine whilst remembering lots of funny stories about Sara and her captivating ways.

The pain never eases and time does not heal we just learn to carry the immense loss and pain. As best we can. However, spending these moments wirh Sara’s bestest friend (and sister-from-another-mister) means so much to me as I know it would to her. Sara couldn’t wait for me and Dan to meet all those years ago and I know she will be relieved to know we have formed a connection for life and are looking out for each other for her.

Some of Sara’s ashes have been scattered across many beautiful oceans across UK and South Africa and I like to think she is swimming freely out there with the dolphins and whales.

Miss you always my babe and I would do anything to have you here with us.
