Hi and welcome to Jaunty Lemon Press, a Design & Illustration Studio based in Cheltenham, England. This range is prompted primarily by my lifelong passion for architecture. Celebrating the most cherished places in our lives, I create beautiful bespoke pieces for you from my studio in the heart of The Cotswolds, ably assisted by a handlebar moustache and two overly inquisitive cats. Arch love at Berrington Hall...

Here are some more shots from the last time we were at the gorgeous Berrington Hall (when the rain and sun were in balance and the grass still green!) - built between 1778 and 1781 in North Herefordshire. As a fine neoclassical country house, the semicircular arch seems to be a bit of leitmotif at Berrington, shown here in apertures 2️⃣, coffered niches 3️⃣, 8️⃣ & 9️⃣, gate arches 5️⃣ & 6️⃣, sash windows both with semicircular heads 🔟 and rectangular in semicircular surrounds 1️⃣, faux coffered semi-domes 4️⃣ it seems to have all variations. Utterly splendid...!

Fabulously ornamented windows in Totnes...!

I’m not entirely sure of the history of this fabulous facade in Totnes, other than it is early C18th and once housed the Old Theatre in the mid C18th. Whether the wonderful scrollwork around the sashes, the characterful keystones with masks - two of which look like executioners(!) - and coved cornice with swags was part of the theatre’s frontage or refer to a particular play I’d love to know. Anyone with any further information about this curious confection...?

Capital spotting in Cheltenham...

Glorious architectural noodle round Cheltenham in the sunshine, photographing capitals, columns and pilasters (which I hope I’ve correctly identified - please correct me if I’m wrong, architectural historians of the world!). Of course I assume Montpellier’s famous caryatids fall into a group all their own!

More from my (pre-rain) recent visit to my ol’ stomping ground of Regency Cheltenham, this time featuring The Neptune Fountain. Originally built in 1893, and featuring Neptune in his seahorse-borne shell-chariot, the fountain’s evidently inspired by the Trevi Fountain in Rome (built in 1762). It’s powered by the River Chelt below, and was carved from Portland stone by sculptor Richard Lockwood Boulton and his sons...

Georgian handsomeness in Cheltenham...

This glorious house is one of my favourites. Built, overlooking the former pleasure grounds attached to Montpellier Spa, sometime in Regency Cheltenham’s heyday between 1820 and 1834. I just love its finely proportioned neoclassical frontage - gorgeous sashes with their delicate beading, ashlar over brick, batwing fanlight and wrought iron balconies. Of course if wishes were horses beggars would ride as the saying goes! Are you as fond of it as I am?

Neoclassical elegance...

Renowned architectural historian Pevsner described the Queen’s Hotel in Regency Cheltenham as ‘one of the finest early Victorian English Hotels’. it opened in 1838, handsomely overlooking Imperial Gardens on the site of Sherborne Spa, one of Cheltenham’s at one time many spa buildings, and looking down the fine tree-lined Promenade. It was designed in the neoclassical style by architect brothers Robert & Charles Jearrad and modelled on the Temple of Jupiter in Rome, complete with Corinthian pillars, fine stucco frontage, hexastyle pedimented portico, sash windows, and rustication with keystones bearing crowns and the initials VR.

Regency elegance...

These shots are of The Municipal Offices basking in the sunshine on a late summer’s afternoon in Cheltenham. Originally designed possibly by George Underwood and built by the Harward brothers c.1823-40 as a terrace of 19 houses, along the Promenade between the High Street at one end and Sherborne Spa and the road up to Montpellier Spa the other. The central 7 houses became The Municipal Offices in 1916. Regency Neoclassical to a tee in stucco over brick with a rusticated ground floor, first and second floor double height Ionic columns 4️⃣ and pilasters, blind boxes 5️⃣, gasoliers 7️⃣, Carron & Co ironwork 1️⃣ 2️⃣ 3️⃣ 6️⃣ 8️⃣ 9️⃣ 🔟, with break forwards and back giving it such a handsome rhythm...

Georgian facelift in Tetbury...

Here are some shots of the Old Manor House, listed as The Old House, on Long Street in Tetbury. As the plaque testifies, this is a late C16th/early C17th with an C18th Georgian frontage with handsome multi-paned sashes, rusticated quoins, dentil cornice and a portico porch with Ionic columns making it look absolutely stunning. I think that note on the door is specifically asking me to go and live there....pretty sure it is!

‘Field & Folk’ showing...

Here are some pictures following last weekend’s fabulous showing of ‘Cotswolds: Field & Folk’ to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Cotswolds National Landscape at Cheltenham Ladies College’s wonderful Parabola Theatre.

80% of the land in The Cotswolds is made up of agriculture - agriculture that has historically forged the wealth of the region, and indeed the country, and which has helped to shape the landscape, its architecture, its animals and its people. Filmed over a year and a half, this feature-length documentary, accompanied by sublime music by Lawton & Mack, took a look at where the farming sector and the people within it find themselves in 2026, examining the challenges they face and what the future might bring. A huge shoutout to everyone involved in such a splendid project and to Alana Hopkins for her kind invitation to attend, and most importantly a very Happy Birthday to Cotswolds National Landscape on their Diamond Anniversary! 6️⃣, 9️⃣ & 🔟

The stunning Parabola Theatre itself sits behind a detached villa, Bayshill House, originally built in 1839-42, probably by Samuel Olney, with glorious fluted Ionic columns 1️⃣, 2️⃣ & 3️⃣, Victorian blind boxes and tripartite sashes 5️⃣, which was adapted and extended in 2009 by Foster Wilson Architects as a theatre for the Cheltenham Ladies College. Bryan Little considers this to be part of, ‘a superb group (of villas) that make Bayshill Road one of the great roads for architecture in all England’! And I for one am inclined to agree...!
