Emily's Fleece

Emily's Fleece I create hand-made items that celebrate wool, and the rich variety of breeds of sheep, which we have here in the UK.

Many fleeces come from my own flock of much-loved, Black Lincoln Longwool Sheep

Another felted fleece rug taking shape, another commission this one, from coloured Ryeland fleece. One of the most time consuming parts of making these rugs is laying out the raw fleece and selecting the best part for the rug, then transporting it to the felting table and turning it upside down (without losing the shape of the rug) ready for wet felting. When new fleeces are first unrolled, it can be hard, to start with, deciphering which part belongs exactly where - especially with loose downy fleeces like this one! Hey ho, all sorted now.

Happy sheep. It's a beautiful sunny, breezy day here up on the hill. The girls are blissful in the shade under the hawthorn tree. Their fleeces are speckled with hawthorn blossom which is drifting down in the breeze.

Remember the raw Valais Blacknose fleece which I showed you a few days ago? Well here is the finished felted fleece rug! This one is a commission and I really enjoyed making it. Every rug and seat pad I make is a new challenge, and Valais is a lovely fleece to work with. The pics show both the fluffy top of the rug and the felted back.

Felted fleece commissions are now closed. I've had an awesome response from the sheep keepers of the uk to my previous post regarding commissions for felted fleece rugs. Thank you so much everyone who's contacted me! I now have as many commissions as I can cope with at this time, so I'm closing commissions for now. If you are interested, and would like to be added to a waiting list, I will keep your contact details and get back to you when I'm taking further orders. Thank you again.

Shearing time is upon us, and commissions for felted sheep fleece rugs are open! Just send me a complete unwashed fleece and I will make it into a beautiful felted fleece rug, which keeps the integrity of the fleece and celebrates British wool!! Any sheep breed considered - I haven't been beaten by one yet!! If you're not a sheep farmer/keeper yourself, I have a good selection of fleeces from various breeds (including my beautifully soft and curly Black Lincoln Longwools), all from local flocks so can discuss what you would like. I've attached some images of previous felted rugs. Please message for more info, prices etc on [email protected] or pm on Facebook. Delivery within UK only at present. Anne (Emily's a sheep!!)

A lovely fleece from a different sheep breed today Valais Blacknose. This one will be a commission from a local lady here in beautiful Shropshire. In the photo you can see it laid out with the top of the fleece upwards. It's been skirted (the grubby edges of the fleece being removed) and it will next be turned the other way up for the wet-felting process. Valais is an excellent fleece to work with, wonderfully soft when it's washed. If you look closely you can see the crimp in the fleece. It's in it's raw state at the moment - should be a lot whiter and softer once it's been felted and washed!! Jack was helping supervise the task today - though he didn't seem to be taking his work too seriously.....

Some images of my friend's flock of Lincoln Longwools, just before shearing. They're a mix of traditional white and also black Lincoln. Really lovely characters, and just look at those fabulous fleeces!
