What an amazing gig to end my tenure as host and curator of TalkingGigs. It was a pleasure and an honour to host Gao Hong and Kadialy Kouyate, two extraordinary artists whose skill, articulate conversation and musical virtuosity brought a resonant expressiveness to their performance at the Performance Venues Drama Studio on the 14th January. The first half was illuminating, with erudite conversation bringing out the artists background, cultural influences and also displayed the consummate mastery of their instruments. The all music second half displayed a collaboration whose synergy emphasised their skill at improvisation and the intuitive understanding of each others instruments. A breathtaking performance brought a standing ovation from the totally absorbed audience. To extend the cross cultural collaboration a little further I joined the duo with some Celtic percussion on my bodhran for two tunes - totally improvised with very positive results judging by the audiences' reaction. Another standing ovation followed their encore. What a great gig and a lovely way to end my association with TalkingGigs.
Earlier, at the end of the interval I broke the news of my departure and introduced my successors ; local Sheffield global folk band Mishra who decided they would love to take TalkingGigs forward as a collective. I am really pleased and very excited that Mishra are now involved, and I look forward to the new energy and gigs that they will bring to such a wonderful format founded in 2014 by Charles Ritchie.
Picture attached shows Charles , Ford Collier and Kate Griffin (Mishra) Myself, Nick Potter; Performance Venues music programmer and John Ball (Mishra).
My thanks to the audiences that have attended TalkingGigs over the years and all the money they raised for ASSIST Sheffield. Thanks to the Talking Gigs volunteers for their help and making my role a lot easier. Thanks to Charles for setting up TalkingGigs. Thanks to Nick Potter for a productive and friendly collaboration that enabled TalkingGigs to flourish and bring some outstanding acts to Sheffield. Thanks to ASSIST Sheffield for being present. Finally my thanks to Mishra for continuing the format.
Here's to a new a new start and more adventures in Edinburgh with my lovey friend, companion, wife and inspiration, Olivia Cox.

ANNOUNCEMENT! Talking Gigs presents: Gao Hong & Kadialy Kouyate

Join us in the Drama Studio for a captivating and informative evening, bringing together Senegalese kora master Kadialy Kouyate and the equally masterful Chinese p**a player, Gao Hong. Their ground breaking collaborative album, Terri K***a, showcases the iridescent counterpoint brought forth by the combination of these two ancient and sacred instruments.

Gao Hong is a renowned Chinese p**a master, composer, and performer. Having already received accolades such as the Beijing Art Cup, she graduated from Beijing’s esteemed Central Conservatory of Music after studying with p**a master Lin Shicheng. She soon moved to the United States, where she has performed at multiple notable festivals and concerts and continued to amass an impressive array of awards and honours. Long fascinated by the kora, Gao’s innate musical curiosity led her to be put in touch with Kadialy.

Kadialy Kouyate is a Senegalese musician, singer, songwriter, and teacher. Born to a family rich in griot tradition, Kouyate has honed the art of traditional storytelling. The study of past heritage and his own instinctive talent helps conjure hypnotic and uplifting rhythms masterfully relayed through the kora and his hauntingly evocative vocals. A committed educator, Kadialy began teaching the kora at Dakar University in Senegal. Upon moving to the UK his passion for sharing knowledge continues as a tutor at the SOAS University of London.

The unique Talking Gigs format promises a spellbinding evening of discovery, with these wonderful musicians exploring their cultural backgrounds and how they ended up collaborating. The enjoyment of the all-music second half will be enhanced by an informed appreciation of the music.
