For one night only, Armistead will Celebrate 50 Years on Barbary Lane, discussing his stories of life, the LGBTQ+ culture in 1970’s USA and the legacy of Anna Madrigal the trans landlady of 28 Barbary Lane. The award-winning author will talk about his landmark series, Tales of the City and how it created a visionary portrait of q***r community in 1970s San Francisco.
Anna Madrigal became a prominent q***r icon in LGBTQ+ culture and was famously played by trans actress Jen Richards and Academy Award and Golden Globe winning actress Olympia Dukakis in the original PBS miniseries and Netflix series. Maupin’s other works include More Tales of the City, Further Tales of the City, Maybe the Moon and The Night Listener which became a feature film starring Robin Williams and Toni Collette.
Armistead Maupin will be speaking at The Conversation, London’s newest literary talks programme which, takes place every Tuesday night at 7pm at St Martin-in-the Fields until Tuesday 28th July, featuring Britain’s leading thinkers, scientists, environmentalists, historians, and writers, and addressing some of the biggest political, social and environmental challenges of our time.
