Portadown District LOL 1 is again holding a Grand Draw in July with proceeds going towards our Somme Memorial Field on the Armagh Road. Last year’s draw was another fantastic success. Tickets are priced at £10 each. This year we are still offering a total of £1690 in prizes but 1st place will receive £1000, 2nd place will receive £500 and 3rd place will receive £190. Tickets are out with all the lodges in the District at the minute and we are now opening it up to the wider public. If you would like a ticket please speak to a member of the District or you can buy one via our PayPal account at PayPal.me/PortadownDistrict1. If you use our PayPal account Please use the friends and family option as your entry may not be included if the full ticket price is not paid. Please also include your name, email and contact number so you can be contacted with your ticket number and if you are the lucky Winner. Looking Forward as always to be led by the excellent Millar Memorial Flute Band at our Mini-12th this Saturday evening.

The band will be parading in Portadown this Saturday night as we have the privilege of leading the officers of Portadown Orange District LOL 1 in the annual Mini Twelfth parade

Statement from Portadown District

As a District, we are disgusted by the comments directed at our local MP, Carla Lockhart, by politicians from several parties.

Yesterday, Carla stood alongside the residents of Scarva as they endured a march through their community that was clearly not wanted by many local people. We observed firsthand that the policing operation was heavy-handed and poorly planned, contributing to tensions rather than helping to ease them.

Only for the presence and leadership shown by Carla, local MLAs, councillors, and community representatives, yesterday could have turned out very differently. Those politicians now seeking to demonise Carla for showing leadership should perhaps take a look at their own actions before criticising others.

Let us not forget that individuals taking part in the march were masked, flags were unfurled, and abuse was shouted at local residents. These were clear breaches of the Parades Commission determination, yet it appears that these issues will receive little or no attention in the wider media coverage.

We commend Carla, local MLAs, councillors, and community leaders for the leadership they displayed in helping to de-escalate tensions during a difficult situation. Their actions stood in stark contrast to those who now seek to score political points from the sidelines.

We have no doubt that the criticism being levelled at Carla will not deter her from continuing to stand up for and represent her constituents, as she has consistently done.

Portadown District is not surprised that the Parades Commission has permitted the planned pro-Palestinian republican/nationalist parade to proceed through Scarva with minimal restrictions, despite concerns from local residents who have clearly stated that they do not want the parade passing through their community and believe it has the potential to increase community tensions.

For many years, the Parades Commission has prevented this District from completing its 1998 Drumcree Church Parade by returning along the Garvaghy Road to Carleton Street, consistently citing community tensions and local opposition as justification for its determinations.

This latest determination appears deeply hypocritical. We are repeatedly told that our members cannot parade home from church because a particular community objects to our presence. Yet, in this instance, a parade is permitted to proceed despite residents expressing similar objections and concerns regarding its impact on community relations.

District Officers will attend the counter-protest in Scarva tomorrow in support of local residents as they exercise their democratic right to protest against this parade passing through their community. They will also observe the policing operation and monitor compliance with the conditions set out in the Parades Commission's determination.

We endorse the residents' call for all those attending the protest to conduct themselves in a dignified and respectful manner and not be provoked by those participating in the pro Palestine Republican/Nationalist parade.

The Parades Commission can no longer credibly use the argument of community tensions against this District while applying a different standard elsewhere. We ask only for fairness, consistency, and equal treatment when determinations affecting this District are being made.
