If your 13β15 year old kids are hanging around Tynemouth, you need to read this.
Over the past few weeks, there has been a serious rise in antisocial behaviour across Tynemouth, particularly every Friday and Saturday night, and itβs only getting worse as the weather improves.
This isnβt isolated. Itβs affecting the beach, local businesses, and the wider community.
Across the area we are seeing:
Large groups of young teenagers drinking alcohol and becoming rowdy
The beach being left in a complete mess every weekend
Fires being started on the dunes
Protected conservation areas being damaged
Attempted break-ins to the beach huts
Burglaries and attempted break-ins to local businesses
Serious damage to the boardwalk, which is now beyond repair
Once they are moved on from the beach, they come up through the dunes, and this is where it begins to directly affect us.
Businesses along Grand Parade are now dealing with:
Staff and customers being threatened and verbally abused
Attempts to break into storage containers
Customer bike theft attempts from what should be a safe bike rack
Benches being damaged and pulled apart, and fencing ripped down
Windows being put through
Graffiti across properties and surrounding areas
Litter and damage left throughout our spaces
As a result, trade is being impacted and, more importantly, people no longer feel safe in what should be a relaxed, family-friendly environment.
At Surfers, weβve now had to introduce an 18+ policy and restrict toilets to customers only, due to repeated damage and misuse.
We understand young people need somewhere to go, but this behaviour is completely unacceptable.
If you are a parent or guardian of these kids, please be aware of where your children are, what they are doing, and the impact itβs having on local businesses and the community. It tends to be the same groups every week.
We are continuing to report incidents and work with authorities and schools, but we also need awareness and support from the community.
Tynemouth is a special place, letβs not allow it to be damaged.
