The story

It was written in the stars.

Master brewing ran in Colonel Porter’s family, so following his time in military service, he teamed up with Chief Chemist Archie Jones, and took up the challenge of creating a brand new ale. Their complementary skills and three years of dedication and refining, hidden away and in secrecy in Archie’s Lab, resulted in the star of ales launching in 1927 – Newcastle Brown Ale (aka Dog, Journey into Sp

ace, Lunatic’s Broth). Striking popular with the locals in the north, Colonel Porter wanted to share this bold brew with everyone far and wide and so navigating with constellation maps and led by the stars they travelled the globe distributing numerous bottles of ‘Dog’, with its ever-increasingly famous blue star badge (its five points representing the five founding breweries of Newcastle) and now, over 40 countries around the world enjoy this marvellous beverage. Just follow The Great Bear – he always points North. And so we welcome you to Colonel Porter’s Emporium - a home that celebrates this journey, with a Tavern, Botanical Gardens and Rhum Bar. A place where Newcastle Brown Ale is enjoyed in its traditional form. And where you’ll also find vintage cocktails, tipsy teas, real ales, rhum masterclasses, private hire and an adventure around every corner…

It’s a true northern star. Come and see a man about a dog… you’re always welcome.

Another Saturday… and once again, there are whispers drifting through the Emporium.
Behind the bookcase in Archie’s Secret Lab something less scientific is taking shape. A secret disco for all to enjoy.

Tonight, DJ Mark Hutchinson takes command of the proceedings, joined by his trusted comrades to ensure your evening is properly soundtracked from first pour to final call. Expect selections chosen with intent, delivered with the sort of confidence that suggests they were never in question to begin with.

Above ground, the Emporium hums in a rather different key.
From 2pm until close in the Main Bar, live serenades drift through the room.

A day of layers. A night of secrets. And as ever, Colonel Porter would insist it was all part of the plan.

A tail of the Pornstar Martini and how the recipe made it into the Colonel’s hands ✨

The Pornstar Martini is said to have emerged in the early 2000s, in the hands of a particularly inventive London bartender working between Knightsbridge and Soho, where reputations were made as quickly as recipes. A creation of vanilla vodka, passionfruit and citrus, it was first conceived as something altogether more understated before evolving into its now unmistakable form, bright, bold, and impossible to ignore.

Naturally, word of such a curious invention travelled quickly.

Colonel Porter is said to have first encountered the drink during one of his later excursions to London, where Archie Jones had been tracking a new wave of experimental serves emerging from the capital’s more unconventional establishments. What interested Jones most was not just the flavour profile, but the construction. A drink with precision at its core, yet wrapped in a sense of mischief.

The defining detail, however, was the presentation.

A chilled shot of prosecco, served alongside the martini rather than within it. A deliberate choice, offering balance, contrast, and - in Porter’s view - a moment of ceremony. He is said to have approved immediately. A drink that invites participation, rather than dictating the experience, was always going to earn its place in the Emporium’s collection.

And so it was duly filed.

Bright, provocative, and carrying just enough theatricality to raise an eyebrow or two, the Pornstar Martini remains a modern classic for those who favour indulgence with intent… and a rather excellent glass of bubbles on the side.

The Colonel has never trusted a Wednesday that passes without a decent bottle being opened.
So each week within the Emporium, selected bottles of wine are available for £20 throughout the evening.

So gather your comrades and enjoy a luxury bottle at a rather agreeable price...

At Colonel Porter’s, even the four-legged wanderers are welcomed warmly through the doors of the Emporium.

Whether accompanying you for a quiet afternoon tipple beneath the candlelight, or settling beside you after a long stroll through the city, well-behaved hounds are always welcome in the Colonel’s company.
Water bowls await, tails are encouraged, and the occasional approving nod from fellow patrons should be expected.

Though should the Emporium become particularly lively, the Colonel reserves the right to place the comfort and safety of our canine companions first, and entry may occasionally be limited during busier hours.

After all, every good tavern deserves a loyal companion

There are certain concoctions one only discovers the morning after…
The Bloody Mary is said to have first appeared in 1920s Paris born amongst American expats, wandering Russians, late-night conversations and bartenders with a taste for experimentation.
A peculiar blend of vodka, tomato and spice that, against all odds, became one of the world’s most enduring cocktails.

Naturally, it wasn’t long before word reached Colonel Porter.
Some say he encountered the recipe following an especially spirited evening whilst travelling abroad in search of brewing inspiration. Others insist it was Archie Jones who took interest first, fascinated by its unusual balance of heat, sharpness and restorative qualities.

Either way, the concoction found its place within the Emporium’s collection soon after.

Bold, savoury, and not for those inclined toward the sweeter side of life, the Bloody Mary has long been favoured by late risers, weary travellers, and anyone seeking salvation after the night before.
A curious remedy… and a rather excellent cocktail besides.

🎩 The Tale of Colonel James Porter
Before the Emporium became a home for candlelight, cocktails and live serenades, there was Colonel James Porter: master brewer, traveller, and the man responsible for taking Newcastle Brown Ale far beyond the streets of the North East.

Following his military service, the Colonel joined forces with Chief Chemist Archie Jones, retreating into Archie’s Lab for three years of trial, error and experimentation in pursuit of the perfect ale. What emerged in 1927 was Newcastle Brown Ale, known to many simply as Dog, marked by the now-iconic blue star.

As the ale travelled across the globe, so too did the Colonel, gathering curiosities, stories, recipes and artefacts from his adventures along the way. Today, those same influences shape Colonel Porter’s Emporium. A place of vintage cocktails, Tipsy Teas, live music and hidden corners waiting to be discovered.

And concealed behind the Colonel’s secret bookcase, Archie’s Lab remains. Now transformed into a hidden space for private soirées, spirited celebrations and evenings that rarely end where intended.

A true northern tale, best enjoyed over a schooner or a carefully crafted tipple ✨
