Wine Man ~ the Vines of Cheshire Solaris, September’s white at the Church Inn 🍷

September’s white comes from right on our doorstep: Vines of Cheshire, a young vineyard in Backford, just a mile from Chester Zoo. Established in 2023, the vineyard’s steep south and south-west facing slopes give excellent natural drainage and maximise sunlight, creating ideal conditions for exceptional fruit.

This week’s pour is the Solaris, a white grape variety grown widely across English and Welsh vineyards for its early ripening and its ability to produce high-quality wines with fruity, aromatic profiles. The grapes were harvested early to keep the resulting wine dry and fresh, with subtle notes of fruit throughout.

Expect a light nose of pear, hedgerow and green apple skin, with a clean, fresh palate carrying more of the same, held together by a bright green apple acidity.

Wine Man’s pick to go with it: our Crispy Monkfish ‘Scampi’, with roasted garlic and lemon aioli. That acidity cuts straight through the crisp coating and sits beautifully against the richness of the aioli.

Served by the glass and bottle all month long as our WINE OF THE MONTH.

What a day for the Tour de Cat! 🚴‍♀️🐾

Huge thank you to everyone who pedalled, cheered, and donated for Saturday’s Cycle Challenge across all seven Cheshire Cat pubs, from the Church Inn to the finish line at the Bulls Head!

On just one day, we raised an incredible…

£2,117 for the North West Air Ambulance Charity 👏 An amazing amount for a single day of bike riding, fete fun, and community spirit.

The breakdown:
🚴 Cycle Riders: £1,045
🎟️ Our Village fete and Tim’bola: £1,072

Every mile, every raffle ticket, and every pound goes towards keeping this vital service in the air when it’s needed most.

Thank you to our riders, our volunteers, and everyone who came along to support on the day. This wouldn’t have been possible without you!

SEPTEMBER at Cheshire Cat Pubs & Inns 🍻Autumn’s rolling in across the Cheshire Cat Pubs 🍂

We’re hoping for one last blast of sunshine, but either way there’s plenty on this month to keep you cosy and entertained.

It’s National Cask Ale Week from 17th-27th September: a pub isn’t a pub without cask ale, and ours all comes from within 35 miles. We’ll be matching ales with food across the pubs, so keep an eye on the events pages.

The Bulls Head kicks things off with a Whisky Tasting and Food Matching evening on Thursday 17th, English whiskies matched with small plates by head chef Andy: book quickly, seats are limited.

Three Car Treasure Hunts are up for grabs this month and next: Bulls Head (Sat 19th), Cholmondeley Arms (Sun 27th) and Fitzherbert Arms (Sat 3rd Oct), each with a £200 gift card prize in aid of the Air Ambulance.

The Three Greyhounds Inn’s rescheduled Garden Party lands later this month, alongside a Brandy Tasting and Food Matching evening with Hine Cognac on Thursday 24th.

The Fitzherbert Arms hosts a Charity 5km Fun Run on Saturday 26th, and quiz masters are back at the Bulls Head and Three Greyhounds Inn too (Cholmondeley joins the fun in October).

Wine Man: Vines of Cheshire Rosé at the 🍷

This month’s rosé comes from right on our doorstep - , a young vineyard in Backford, just a mile from Chester Zoo.

Established in 2023, the vineyard’s steep south and south-west facing slopes make the most of every hour of English sunshine, while the varieties were chosen specifically for our cool climate. It’s already picking up recognition too, with the rosé taking home an award at the 2025 WineGB Awards.

Made from a blend of Cabernet Noir and Cabernet Cortis grown on those sun-soaked slopes, this is an exceptionally good full-flavoured English rosé - not one of the pale, delicate blush wines you might expect.

Expect a deep amber-ruby colour and a glass full of ripe strawberry, cherry and pink peppercorn on the nose, with alpine strawberry, cherry and redcurrant carrying through on the palate, balanced by a gentle building acidity and a light confected raspberry finish.

Wine Man’s pick to go with it: Kidderton Ash goats cheese fritters, lamb croquettes, or a braised lamb shoulder shepherd’s pie for something heartier. Delicious… cheers! 🥂
