Almost all of the Corps were on the surface now. Most had secured the potential landing zone, but reports were coming in of some pods going off target and contact had been lost entirely with more than one podโฆ
Those that had landed on target had now disembarked and they moved through the desolate cityscape in small squads.
The obsidian pyramids were titanic in scale. The Corps moved across them akin to ants as the scale reduced them to nought more than specks on the surface of the colossal structures.
Cpl Fergus, Corpsman Griffith and Yates had reached the landing zone, a large clearing amongst the large pyramids. A market place in a previous life, they sheltered from the wind in the ruins of a market stall, dried fruit scattered around their feet.
Across the square plateau, other squads had secured each side of the perimeter.
They radioed to the ship in orbit.
โNo contact. Landing zone securedโ
โRoger that. Preparing for descent.โ
In the darkness there was a blur. A sound akin to a bird rustling through leaves. But bigger. Much bigger.
Cpl Fergusโ head snapped as he sought to follow the movement. But it was gone.
More movement, and there. A third movement!
Something large, and very dark was moving through over the ziggurat steps of the black pyramids around the square.
The Corps darted their heads around, helmet torches stabbing into the dark, piercing it, but not fast enough, nor bright enough to illuminate the source of the movements.
โWhatโs happening!?โ A startled Yates cried out, he hadnโt been the same since the mutilations aboard the ghostshipโฆ heโd had nightmares in cryosleep. Skinned bodies screaming at him as he was frozen in a permanent nightmare. Now he was on an alien planet, in perpetual night and something bloody massive was out there, in the darkness!
Griffith pointed his motion detector towards the direction of the movement. Scanning the inky night.
The slight humming as the device checked ahead, sounded almost like a feline purring as the device scanned the darkness for movement.
Nothing.
More scans. Nothing. No movement. No heat signals. The pyramids were dark, cold and very still indeed.
Fergus sighed. โWeโre jumping at ghosts. Thereโs nothing here. Itโs safeโ
In the darkness, something watched them.
It was hungry.
It opened its mouth. It was full of sharp teeth. Drool dripped across the needle sharp incisorsโฆ
So many teeth.
