CHARLIE SMITH LONDON is a project based contemporary art gallery with a rigorously curatorial ethos. Established in 2007 by Zavier Ellis, CHARLIE SMITH LONDON initially curated independent exhibitions and participated in selected international art fairs. The gallery ran a program in a space above The Reliance pub in Shoreditch between October 2009 and January 2021, presenting exactly 100 shows and

achieving cult status whilst doing so. During this period Ellis also collaborated with filmmaker Simon Rumley by launching and co-curating THE FUTURE CAN WAIT, an independent museum scale exhibition for emerging to mid-career artists that occurred during Frieze week for 10 years. Between 2011 and 2014 THE FUTURE CAN WAIT was organized by invitation in partnership with Saatchi’s New Sensations. Ellis has also curated exhibitions at museums, galleries and independent locations internationally including Berlin, Frankfurt, Helsinki, Klaipeda, Los Angeles, Naples and Rome. CHARLIE SMITH LONDON continues to present multiple curated exhibitions and initiatives and places work in prominent private collections globally.

Original Zavier Ellis works on paper — available now for just £50!

Released at a special museum collector’s price to coincide with the exhibitions 'This is England' at South Hill Park, Berkshire and 'The Life in a Line' at the Heath Robinson Museum, London.

'England (Video et taceo)' layers portraits of Queen Elizabeth I, Lord Byron, and Johnny Rotten into a single composite figure, collapsing centuries of cultural and political identity. Embedded within the image are fragments of a recent anti-immigration protest in Epping, intertwining past and present narratives of power, dissent, and exclusion.

Worked over by hand with emulsion and marker, the piece recalls a defaced street poster. Elizabeth I’s motto “I see and am silent” reframes silence as both authority and complicity.

This limited work on paper series is available to order now at projectpapyrophilia.com - hit the link in bio to browse & buy.

"Please don't ever send me any "No Kings" or other left wing nonsense again. I collect art, not propaganda for idiots."

Not quite art criticism but such enlightening feedback is always welcome.

These two aren't vandalising it so we presume they're radical Marxists from the far left.

“Harris’ relationship with her subject is deep-seated, arising from fervent childhood memories. She recalls ‘the anticipation of piling onto a coach that ended up somewhere wet and cold, waving my homemade banner, singing and chanting at CND protests. We collected badges and leaflets, and the atmosphere was potent and thrilling’. Informed by these pivotal formative experiences, her enduring exploration of atomic explosions as powerful cultural, historical, and political symbols continues to resonate profoundly in an era of persistent global instability”.
