“We spend ages growing up and learning and internalising, letting the world shout at us and tell us who we are and what we should do,” says Surrey-based filmmaker Ben Robins (). “Then one day we’re given a pencil, or a camera or a computer and taught how to write and draw and express and we can finally shout back.”

“Before I’d made anything, I wrote a script for a short called The Last Jeff that was basically 3 people in 1 room. I figured if I needed to, I could shoot it on my phone. I basically assumed that if I couldn’t do it myself, it would never get done, because no one would ever want to make something I’d written. Over time, I made friends with some very talented people through work and various other projects. We made ‘Jeff’ together, about 3 years after I first wrote it, and with their help, it turned into a much bigger film.

I couldn’t be more proud of it; it came so far from that tiny, dingy little iPhone film I had in my head in 2016, and it’s all because of those wonderfully talented people.”

“I am passionate about helping people feel limitless through connecting to my creative work and characters,” says Edinburgh-based actor and life coach Ashley Sutherland (). Her creative journey began at age 5 when her mum sent her to drama classes in the hope that she would move through life with more confidence than she did.

“My mum didn’t want me to be shy like she was growing up; little did she know I’d go all in! I got my first opportunity to be in a short film age 7 and since then I have wanted to be creating characters on screen.

I’d describe myself as a screen actor and life coach to creatives (). I always bring elements of myself into a role and thrive on true connection. I love working in new ways and with new people so I'm always intrigued by projects that are completely different to my last. If I had to describe my work in three words I would say connected, intimate and limitless.”

“If I can be a creative part in an inclusive, supportive and meaningful conversation then I'm happy with that,” says Glasgow-born but London-based jazz artist Luca Manning ().

“My creative journey started growing up in the buzzing Glasgow music scene. I remember writing angsty teenage pop tunes on my ukulele, playing the various clubs/open mic nights and absolutely loving the fact I was getting away with so much underage drinking. The Glasgow jazz scene was full of amazing young players and we would congregate on a Thursday at Dukes Bar () to hear new projects and jam, which was a pretty significant time in my musical upbringing.

It wasn't until my late teens that I sort of fell into a discovery of jazz music. I started attending a weekly jazz vocal workshop run by the Strathclyde Youth Jazz Orchestra () which is where I began to learn all about this exciting new musical language. After I left high school I moved to London to begin a degree in Jazz at (or is it mucus and trauma…?), which I'm just about to finish!

I enjoy anything creative and use my skills as a performer to work alongside others to create things that are special. I get excited when a piece of work features cross arts collaboration, bringing together sound / aesthetic and movement to create an immersive experience for the audience. But a specific experience that sticks out is my initial collaboration with Steph Burrell. Meeting Steph was like finding the other half of my creative brain - we are such kindred spirits. She is so ridiculously talented and I can't wait to see what we do next.”

“I think what underlies all of my different costumes and voices is that I want people to question constructs like authenticity and identity,” says Glasgow-based musician and composer Lewis Clarke (). Lewis describes the work they make as q***r and theatrical synth-pop, often accompanied by surreal homemade videos.

“Over the last year I’ve had some serious revelations about myself, and found a huge joy in untangling the person I want to be from the person I’ve been made to be. Realising that many of the labels I have assigned to myself my whole life are descriptive rather than prescriptive, and who/what I actually am is my own choice.

If I was to have any lasting impact on the world, it would be for people to reach a similar understanding of themselves and share in that joy.”

Kieran’s journey started in 2020 when he decided to quit his job as a television runner to pursue his passion for images. “It wasn’t until everything stopped that I had time to reflect. I realised that I wasn’t any closer to my filmmaking aspirations than I was when I’d never been on a set, I had no time or energy to work on my own projects.”

Kieran () has a passion for landscapes and he’s currently creating images for a long term project documenting South Lanarkshire where he grew up. “I want to make images that tell stories, provoke second glances and make people feel something.”

“Ironically, since I left the creative industries last year I’ve never been more productive. I took up photography and it opened a whole new creative avenue for me which has fed back into my filmmaking ambitions and projects and I’ve never been more fulfilled.”

“I would like to make people laugh, to question things, to inspire them and to infuriate them into taking action. I want to portray reality, particularly telling stories about strong, influential women from the past and the present,” says Edinburgh-based actress and dancer Hannah Collins ().

Hannah’s creative journey began in France, age 11. “Dancing at a local academy was how I discovered my love for performing. I then began my training in Musical Theatre at , which I loved. During the summer of 2015 I interned at acting agency, . Getting to help actors with self-tapes, going to see shows in the West End and then landing an audition for TV myself sparked a realisation that acting was what I really wanted to explore. So, I decided to do an MA in Acting at the following year and I haven’t looked back since!

At the end of last year I moved back to Scotland from London and I connected with Glasgow-based filmmaker and director, Nicholas Afchain (). We are currently collaborating on a new short film influenced by French cinema and set in Edinburgh. It will be exciting to create a piece of work that involves my Scottish and French backgrounds. I have always believed Scotland has so much to offer for the Film/TV industry and I’m delighted to finally turn my thoughts into actions.”

“I intend to support my local community of musicians, ensuring the immense talent of those I work with is deservedly recognised both nationally and globally,” says Edinburgh-based musician and promoter Elizabeth Thomson ().

Elizabeth co-founded music management and PR company Hit Parade () with regular collaborator . “Witnessing the drive and level of creativity from the emerging and upcoming artists around me has without a doubt been the catalyst for my involvement in this area of the industry.

I was able to launch Hit Parade because of a musical collaboration during the first UK lockdown. I, Orla Noble and Edinburgh-based folk singer Hector Shaw () remotely worked on a cover of a tune we realised we shared a love for after I had posted its artwork on . Through the promotion of this project, Orla and I identified the potential to collaborate further by combining our skill set and interests. The symbiotic relationship between our specialisms has made Hit Parade an advantageous and exciting venture.

I would love for Hit Parade to be an avenue to success and happiness in supporting the careers of Scotland’s fantastic music creators.”

“I would like to inspire more women to get behind the camera,” says Glasgow-based filmmaker and photographer Polly Morrison ().

“I fulfilled my wish to be centre stage by joining an acting class when I was 10. A young film maker from came in to cast some of us in a short film she was making for her thesis. When on set, I remember being so much more interested in what was going on behind the camera. From here I started my own little films.

Fast forward 7 years later during my second year of university studying film, my virgo self decides that the cinematographer role didn’t provide me with enough control, so it changed to writer and director. I’m so happy I listened to my heart early on and went with what I knew I loved to do.”

“I hope I can inspire people to follow their passions and never settle for a job that doesn’t bring them fulfilment or joy,” says LA-based graphic designer Simone ( ).

Simone started her creative journey in fine art. “I have always been drawn to art so I knew I would go into the creative field for my career. But of course someone kept telling me that in order to make art a career then I would have to be a graphic designer. So that’s what I did!

When the pandemic hit, I started creating fictional show posters for fun, just for myself. I decided to post them to instagram and tagged artists who I was featuring in my designs. One of the bands, , saw my design and liked it so much that they messaged me to ask if they could use it on some of their merchandise. I was so thrilled, never thinking that these artists would see it or even care about the designs I was making. It gave me the confidence I needed and I had such a great time working with them and adjusting some of the design for their merchandise.”
