Our story
The community that is RE:SOUL.
Since it’s launch in May 2015, RE:SOUL has become an essential part of Leeds’ unique underground live music scene, particularly the vibrant jazz and soul scene. A monthly jam session founded by saxophonist Jonny Faull and DJ Lubi Jovanovic held on the last Monday (usually) of the month, originally at Hirst’s Yard and then since September 2017, at the legendary Wardrobe Leeds. In February 2020, the night moved to the legendary Hifi Club in Leeds for their weekly Sunday Joint session. RE:SOUL is the final Sunday monthly in term time. Dedicated to showcasing the genres of neo-soul, leftfield/alternative hip-hop, contemporary jazz, deep classic soul and jazz-funk, the venue is buzzing month after month with musicians, vocalists, MCs, and music lovers keen to jam, head-nod and enjoy the vibe!

Each monthly session begins with a set of original live music by a guest artist or band. There is so much emerging talent coming out of Leeds at the moment for this kind of music its unreal! RE:SOUL is proud to host the best upcoming artists/bands often for their debut performances. So far artists/bands who have been featured over the years have included Malaika, Pariss Elektra, Akin (The Abstract Orchestra), Indecent Gorilla, Gracie, Portmanteau, Michael Bird, The Freese Trio, Vanessa Jamie, Pieces Of A Man (Tru Thoughts Records), Miss Idelle, Mali Hayes (Brownswood Future Bubblers), Necktr (Wormfood Records), Garde Dog (Tight Lines), Lexys Reid, Têtes de Pois, Slow Loris, Mamilah, Dulahli, Glass Cage Experiment, Project Hilts, Narcle, Wise Willis and Lizzie Berchie. We may have missed a few out as we’ve had 36 sessions but you can see many of today’s bands started first in Leeds at RE:SOUL.
Following the guest artist set comes the jam session with the RE:SOUL in-house band (currently musicians from TĂŞtes de Pois, Slow Loris, Svarc/Hanley/Longhawn Trio, Jasmine, MDVLNS). This is the chance for vocalists, instrumentalists and MCs who love neo-soul/hiphop/jazz/funk etc to get on stage and do their thing performing covers or originals with the backing of professional musicians that make up the house band :

From the moment doors open, between the sets and late into the night after the jam, Leeds legend of all things jazz/soul/global beats DJ LUBI (Soul Rebels Sessions/DIG Family/Sunday Joint) runs things, both as DJ and host. Expect him spinning music from his big collection of neo-soul/hiphop/jazz/funk - past, present and future.
Look out for the monthly RE:SOUL event pages on Facebook for information on each individual session at The Wardrobe Bar as well as one-off takeovers at other venues.
