Psychologists call it the “reminiscence bump” — memories formed during our teens and early adulthood tend to remain particularly strong, and music can be a powerful trigger for bringing them back.
It's known as music-evoked autobiographical memory.
So when an old skool tune hits and suddenly you feel something from 30+ years ago, you're not simply remembering the music.
You're reconnecting with the people, places, emotions and experiences that became attached to it while you were becoming YOU.
Maybe that's why old skool never really feels old.
The years passed. The music stayed. And somewhere in there... so did we. 💙🎶
