Syrah lover anyone? I tasted this OUTSTANDING single vineyard Crozes-Hermitage on Sunday while learning about northern Rhône. Here’s the tasting note 📝
-
On the look: medium purple (usually means young)
On the nose: pronounced pepper, red fruits (cherry) and black fruits (blackberry), liquorice, violet, subtly jammy, vanilla and charred wood.
On the palate: dry, medium+ acidity, medium tanning, high alcohol, uncommonly full body and medium+ intensity of those similar to the nose plus a bit of leather and smokey meat characters. Long finish.
-
Over all it’s very well balanced but personally I’d say the alcohol is overpowering a little bit. Good length, intensity and great complexity.
-
Now I’d really love to have a wee bite of blue cheese with this wine! 🧀 🍷

It’s wine o’clock everybody 🥂 Per your wish, I have opened up this 2018 Argentina 🇦🇷 Bonarda 🍇from the renowned Mendoza region! I believe it is made by and I bought it from our local wine shop and again, I am pleasantly surprised by the quality.
-
It would go well with steak or roasts in general. It’s like the Italian chianti Classico - goes well with most read meat dish and roasts... the safest option for any dinner party! It’s only £10.95 and I am just delighted 😁 Here’s the tasting note 📝
-
1 - on the look, it is clear medium garnet (red-ish)
2 - on the nose, it’s got clean and medium+ aromas of red fruits like cherries, strawberries and cooked plums (jammy). Also notes of game and complex oakiness of pepper, nutmeg and vanilla. Subtle hints of liquorice, leather and mint. I’m in wow now.
3 - On the palate at last, it’s dry, medium- tanning, medium+ acidity with medium+ flavours of red fruits, black fruits and oakiness that’re consistent with the nose. Medium body and medium finish. I just want to say how much I appreciate it when the plate is consistent with the nose, so many wines the aroma promised way more than the flavours and it can just be rather disappointing.
-
Overall it’s a good balanced wine. It’s developed and can be consumed now or age longer due to the acidity.
-
A bit about Mendoza 🇦🇷 This province dominates wine making in Argentina. The vines are planted in desert conditions, protected from the rains by the Andes mountains in the west. For this wine in particular, I think it’s is from Maipú, located in the lower attitudes area of central east of Mendoza.
-
About the grape 🍇 Bonarda, it’s the 2nd mostly planted variety after Malbec in Argentina. It’s late ripening and produces deep coloured wine with high acidity.

I wanna scream my lungs off to tell you how amazed I am at this 2018 FURMINT (grape) by .winery 😱😱😱It is a Hungarian white wine delivered from Edinburgh based earlier today. Before going into the details, I wanna dedicate this post to my dear friend Dora - I opened this bottle for her saluting her dedication, love and care for family 🥂
-
📝 Ok the wine 📝
1 - on the look it’s clear pale lemon
2 - on the nose it’s got this complex medium+ aroma of elderflower, pear and peach notes mixed with the secondary aroma of yeast, butter and cream, which got me super excited to taste 🤩
3 - on the palate, it’s dry with medium acidity, same medium+ primary notes of floral and stone fruits, mineral, secondary notes of yeast, butter and cream. It’s got this satisfying mouthful feel with medium+ body and medium finish.
-
Overall is so well balanced and complex. It’s a very good wine. I would have thought it is a medium to high price ranged Chablis (£15+) if not knowing what it is in advance. Guess what, it’s only £11.95 😱😱😱 That’s why I’m so amazed. Lately I’ve been really impressed by the quality and complexity of the wines from Eastern Europe (Bulgaria and Romania) and they have a great price for value. Eastern European wine is the new sexy, period.
-
I think it can go well with grilled sea bass or fish and chips. But you know what, I’m just gonna drink it on its because it’s too good to be interfered.

The wine of today is the 2018 organic Rioja 🇪🇸 made from Tempranillo and Garnacha (aka Grenache in France) grapes. I paired it with medium rare sirloin steak 🥩 with cucumber salad 🥗
-
They went rather well together - the salt and pepper on the steak brought out the vanilla spice and red fruits flavour (raspberry and cherry) and these flavours are also complementary to the cool minty herbaceous (rosemary and thyme) seasoning on the steak.
-
I can’t tell you the colour as I was drinking it at night under my yellow LED light 😜Rioja tends to be garnet (red-ish colour) but I think this one is actually medium ruby (purple). Its dry; medium- tanning, medium- acidity, medium body and medium finish - a very balanced wine and should be consumed now rather than age further.
-
Available at my favorite neighbour @27.elliotts . As mentioned at the beginning, it goes very well with grilled meat with simple salt pepper and herb seasoning 🥩🔥🧂🌿 Also give it 30min at least to open up further.

A sneak peek of what’s coming in the coming a few weeks. I’m resuming the WEST Level 3 journey with during this lockdown. These are all the wines selected to accompany the course. I’ll be tasting and posting the reviews along the course - assuming I won’t get too tipsy to note down anything, knowing myself it’s highly likely to happen but I’ll try my best! All of them will be available to order from for Londonders. Stay tuned!

Long time no wine folks! 🥂 Today I’m excited to review this Aussie 🇦🇺 Gewürztraminer with you. Bought from my lovely neighbour 👉 @27.elliotts A typical Gewürztraminer would go well with Asian food that’s got intense and rich favours but for this one, it would actually go rather well with roasted chicken and grilled fish! If you’re cooking any of these dishes next week, do pop over to 27 Elliot to give this wine pairing a go!
-
📝 Tasting Notes 📝
On the look: clear medium amber (basically deep gold with orange hue)
-
On the nose: pronounced intensity with aromas of lychee, vanilla, dried apricots and mangos, marmalade, honey, rose water and cinnamon.
-
On the pallet at last! VERY dry, medium+ acidity surprisingly in a good way. Medium + body with this rather pleasant mouthful oily feel, medium intensity of dried apricot, honey and rose water. Medium + finish.. 13% abv
-
My conclusion is that this is a VERY good Gewürztraminer. It’s fully developed and should be consumed now, not suitable for further ageing (with quarantine everything should be consumed now as well... 😈 🤪)
-
Like mentioned at the beginning this is not a typical Gewürztraminer for pairing with Asian food due to the relatively high acidity and it should be great for roasted white meat and grilled fish 🐟
-
A little tips about Gewürztraminer: the northern France Alsace region is renowned for Gewürztraminer (besides Riesling) the historical German influence can be see on the bottle packaging from Alsace for its long and thin styled bottle. Moreover, the acidity level tends to be medium to low from that region for Gewürztraminer hence making our Aussie one rather unique.
-
I hope this review has given you some thirst for wine. Life is too short, enjoy while you can and please drink responsibly. 🙏🙏🙏
