Tracey Cullen set the tone perfectly with a gorgeous opening set. When Donovan came out, he talked openly about wanting to play Derry for years, and how Belfast always seems to get the bulk of the gigs. Watching him finally play here, in that hall, with that crowd, felt like we were part of something he’d been waiting to do for a long time. A brilliant night all round.

This is notable, since the Sunshine Superman is not commonly found performing in venues normally reserved for council meetings and wedding fairs.

Audience members can expect songs including 𝗠𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗬𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄, 𝗝𝗲𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗽𝗲𝗿, 𝗛𝘂𝗿𝗱𝘆 𝗚𝘂𝗿𝗱𝘆 𝗠𝗮𝗻, and 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗱. Despite sounding like items from four entirely different concerts, they will all be performed by the same person.

Doors open at 6.45pm. The show begins at 7:30pm. People will sit. People will stand. Someone will clap at the wrong time. Someone else will confidently announce they “haven’t heard Catch the Wind in years”, delivering this information as though it were restricted access.

And yes, someone will inevitably declare they “preferred his early stuff”. This outcome is unavoidable and should be accepted in advance.

If you wish to witness a living legend while maintaining a perfectly neutral facial expression, this event is ideal.

Last night in the iconic Guildhall was one of those rare evenings where everything aligns. Richard Thompson took to the stage and reminded everyone exactly why he’s regarded as a true master.

From the first note, the atmosphere shifted, that unmistakable guitar tone, the storytelling, the ease, the command. It was all there. Then, in the second half, Zara Phillips joined Richard on stage, adding a new depth and dynamic to the performance. Their connection, both musically and personally, brought something special to the room.

The evening opened with The Henry Girls, who brought the warmth, precision, and unmistakable Donegal spirit they’re known for. Their harmonies filled the Guildhall in a way only they can, creating the perfect foundation for what followed. They set the tone beautifully.

A remarkable night in a remarkable venue. Nights like this make me stop and appreciate my city even more, its heritage, its people, and the privilege of being even a small part of bringing moments like this to life.
