“Britain could face food shortages” was a recent news headline. Sadly, the larder is already facing food shortages.
This photo of our stock trailer was taken just 24 hours after being refilled with our weekly supermarket order.
That’s six cans of chilli con carne and five cans of beans left to feed all of the people in the Teign Valley who are struggling to buy enough food, for the rest of the week.
We’ve had to cut back our grocery orders quite drastically recently because the grants that used to keep us going are now smaller, fewer and less frequently available.
If it wasn’t for the generosity of our wonderful community donors we’d be in serious difficulty so a very sincere thank you to all of you.
The fact that we know each month how much we’ll receive from your standing orders allows us to budget accordingly. At the moment, we are only spending what we know is covered by community donations. And sadly, it’s not enough. The amount we can buy has become less and less as the price of many basic foods continues to rise. The result is what you see in the photo: supplies running out within a day or two which means that some people in the Valley are going hungry.
Imagine visiting the Larder because you have nothing at home to give the kids for tea, and all you find is some packets of instant noodles or a can of soup.
Here are three ways that you can help:
• Set up a standing order for a regular donation. If 50 people could give just
£10 a month, that would make a massive difference.
• Join our team of volunteers. If we do secure more funds, so we can resume
our normal weekly shop, we’ll need a bit more help to get it delivered to the trailer and stacked.
• If you already donate or volunteer, wonderful - and thank you! Talk to your friends about our situation and encourage them to donate and/or volunteer too.
