Would anyone know the names of the Landlord(s) of the Pub in the late 80's/early 90's?

Cow & Snuffers Llandaff
WHILE a Kings Arms, White Hart or Royal Oak can be found in almost every Welsh town or village, there can only be one Cow and Snuffers.

As a result, the Llandaff North alehouse has been recognised as a watering hole with one of Britain’s most unusual names.

Legend has it that the public house in Gabalfa Road is haunted by a terrifying ghost, and Benjamin Disraeli – the 19th century Conservative Prime Minister – was reportedly a regular punter at the Tudor-style drinking spot.

Along with the Bucket of Blood – a Cornwall guesthouse that takes its name from an incident when a human head was found in a well at the site – Cardiff’s Cow and Snuffers has earned a place on a list of Britain’s 10 most unusual pub names.

The table was compiled by independent tourism website www.iknow-uk.com after travellers plucked out their favourite and least frequently used names for Britain’s 57,000 licensed premises.

The Cow and Snuffers came sixth in the table, while Bucket of Blood was top. It was followed by Sally Up Steps and Bob’s Smithy, both in Bolton.

Although no-one is certain of how the Cow and Snuffers got its name, historical records have described the 205-year-old business as a former coach house built in the 19th century, and reveal that it once sat alongside the Merthyr-Cardiff canal.

Appropriately, a “ludicrous name contest” may have earned it its unconventional title, but ancient texts have also referred to it as the Red Cow.

Today, the Cow and Snuffers bears few reminders of its past, though a bust of Disraeli is one reminder.

It is thought its lack of historical context is largely due to the pub starting life as a tiny beerhouse before it moved into a larger venue built close by.

Landlord Graham Mathers, who along with his wife Jennie took over the pub three years ago, said: “The only extra information we know is that this building, which isn’t the original, dates back to 1905.

“An Earl held a naming contest – don’t ask me why – and I believe that at the time the canal was lined with gas lamps and that a man used to s***f them out, hence the ‘s***fers’ part of the name.
