Colour in art. This week we started a focus on colour. We are exploring the possibilities of colour, how can it be changed, how can it be lightened / darkened, how can it be combined to make new shades and colours and how we can use it. We started off with a simple blue and white tray to demonstrate the effect white has when mixed in. I started with a ‘I wonder what will happen’ question which I left them to answer without telling them or teaching them directly. i then encouraged them to explore the colours and see if they were right in their predictions. As they progressed they adjusted their thinking through their own experiments and talking to each other and by the end of the session had taught themselves about light and dark and had started to think about how to lighten and change the colour. We extended things by using paper to press down into the tray to make some prints which really showed the graduation of the colour change on the tray. A great start to this exploration in colour in Art. These children are 3 years old and already are capable of such self driven learning - I love the power of self directed learning!
