Most golfers will happily praise a perfectly prepared green, immaculate fairway or beautifully presented golf course. But how often do we stop to thank the people responsible for making it happen?
Tuesday, September 8 marks International Thank A Greenkeeper Day, with BIGGA encouraging golfers, golf clubs and the wider industry to recognise the professionals whose skill, dedication and hard work keep courses around the world in playing condition.
And today's greenkeeper is far more than someone who simply cuts grass.
The modern greenkeeping profession encompasses agronomy, environmental management, team leadership, budgeting and increasingly sophisticated technology. Data analytics, autonomous machinery, precision irrigation and sustainable course-management practices are all becoming part of the modern greenkeeper's toolkit.
Behind the scenes, greenkeepers are also dealing with increasingly challenging weather conditions, water management, changing environmental requirements and the constant demand to provide golfers with the best possible playing surfaces.
Golf clubs are being encouraged to put their greenkeeping teams in the spotlight—introducing them to members, offering behind-the-scenes glimpses of their work or simply taking the time to organise a breakfast or lunch as a gesture of appreciation.
For golfers, it can be even simpler.
