PirateClown Theatre

PirateClown Theatre Bath-based theatre company. We're purveyors of lyrical penny dreadfuls (adjusted for inflation). We aim for pared-down studio theatre.

PirateClown is a collaboration between writer Stephen Bush ('pirate') and performer Ed Browning ('clown'). We like to stage lyrical new writing with constraints applied: the casts should be compact, each member having equal narrative importance, and the show as a whole should see the barest minimum of props and scenery. To date, we have performed the following plays:

1. With Something Like Sympat

hy - 1st to 3rd March 2012 (The Rondo Theatre, Bath), and 7th to 9th February 2013* (The Alma Tavern and Theatre, Bristol).
2. The Sundown Syndrome - 20th to 21st September 2012 (The Rondo Theatre, Bath).
3. The Orchid Girl - 13th to 15th February 2014* (The Alma Tavern and Theatre, Bristol).

* Highlighted shows were staged in association with MAST Stage Productions. Furthermore, throughout our shows so far, we've had the pleasure of working with the topmost local talent - in alphabetical order:

1. Charlotte Cooke (set design)
2. Sica Denerley-Weiss (director; http://www.imdb.com/name/nm4778673/)
3. Luke John Emmett (lighting design; http://lukejohnemmett.co.uk/)
4. Lloyd Evans (lighting design; http://www.lloydevansdesigns.co.uk/)
5. Sian Henderson (director)
6. Danann McAleer (actor and director; http://theatrebristol.net/danann-mcaleer)
7. Gemma Reynolds (actor; http://www.castingcallpro.com/uk/view.php?uid=226204)
8. Joe Shire (actor; http://www.castingcallpro.com/uk/view.php?uid=255137)

A colossal thank you to all who came to Orchid - your support and kind words have been appreciated by all! This 'thank you' acknowledges also that the current theme to public transport is 'water where there shouldn't be water', all of which has made moving about awkward... so: THANK YOU. Watch this space for updates and word on future projects, but in the meantime, if you're interested in knowing more about the show's subject matter - FGM - I'd like to point you to the World Health Organisation for the basics (http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs241/en/) and for extra depth, the End FGM European Campaign (run by Amnesty International in partnership with a number of NGOs; http://www.endfgm.eu/en/). Quite coincidentally, a high profile campaign (200,000+ signatories) is currently circulating, promoted by The Guardian and petitioning for FGM to be taught in schools. It was initiated by a Bristol schoolgirl, Fahma Mohamed, and can be found here: http://www.change.org/petitions/educationgovuk-tell-schools-to-teach-risks-of-female-genital-mutilation-before-the-summer-endfgm. 90k more names are needed at present... please consider.

Well, show's over, everyone: many thanks to all who came and for all the support we've recieved! Three sold-out nights, one (theatrical) directiorial debut, and many vindictive hangovers. It's been wondrous! Ripping off the end of old Bond films where they say 'James Bond will return in [insert title here]', there'll be new project details soon...

Two down, one to go! We've played to full houses both times and thus - numerous caps are doffed to all who came! Bristol: you've been two-thirds wonderful. Ergo: tonight looks very promising indeed!

08/02/2013

A storming start to the show: we sold out yesterday and we've sold out for Saturday! A handful of tickets remain for tonight; if you're interested, a subtle hint shortly follows... please book NOW! (Don't forget: the Alma also offer a discount to pre-booked pre-theatre diners)

02/02/2013

We can also offer you someone else's special offer: if you're coming to the show, we'll point out that if you're having a pre-theatre meal at the Alma first, you get a 10% discount on food (check their website: it tells you so). This is no greasy spoon eatery, either; this is top-tier gastropubbery with words like 'charcuterie' on the website - in short, it's glorious. They've got rabbit and pistachio terrine! Micro-coriander! Blumenthal's pork-and-cumulonimbus chops! (One of these is a lie.) http://www.almatavernandtheatre.co.uk/the-kitchen

You can now see a rehearsal shot, thanks to the director: http://t.co/0iPd9JXl. Instagram's option to 'add the flare of a just-gone-off bomb' makes Joe's head seem a nanosecond off from imploding. Oh, and in the centre right, be tantalised by the options: is it an actor asleep on the job? Or is it acting? Answer will be revealed next Thursday!

With a week to go, you can now see our flyer-spew over Bristol and Bath. They look like 'come to a funeral' cards. Which makes sense. We're offering humorous semi-miserabilism lying somewhere between the twin poles of Beckett and an Eastenders Christmas special.

18/01/2013

We're in Bristol's Alma Tavern from the 7th to 9th February for all the fun of the funeral: some of you may have seen us when we took this show to Bath. This time, we can promise you: we've now got more than one prop. Come join us! http://www.facebook.com/events/421098597961053/
