Presentation

The European Bars Federation / Fédération des Barreaux d’Europe (FBE) was founded in Barcelona on 23 May 1992 as successor to the Conference of Major European Bars. Today the FBE has 250 members Bars, representing more than 1,000,000 lawyers. We promote the rule of law, the supremacy of the law, the independence of justice and the right to a fair trial. We represent the defence of hu

man rights in Europe and in the world. We act when these principles are threatened in many jurisdictions. The independence of justice is fundamental for a just society. The FBE is organized with standing committees and ad hoc commissions. The former are dedicated to universal and basic aspects. The latter are dedicated to contingent or local needs. All commissions work constantly to reach the fixed goal. The FBE organizes two annual congresses, each time in a different European City. These events offer unique opportunities to discuss common problems and share information and experiences. The FBE is committed to providing international specialist legal training, including participation in congresses organized by member bar associations, law societies and other legal entities so as to reach a greater number of recipients.

The Fédération des Barreaux d’Europe (FBE) had the honour of participating in the EUIPO IP Case Law Conference 2026 in Alicante, one of Europe’s leading and most influential high-level conferences dedicated to intellectual property law. ⚖️🇪🇺

Organised by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) under the theme “Growing through change”, the event brought together judges of the Court of Justice of the European Union and the General Court, members of the EUIPO Boards of Appeal, leading IP practitioners, academics, representatives of patent offices and international organisations from across Europe.

The conference was opened by João Negrão, Executive Director of EUIPO.

This year’s programme addressed some of the most important and rapidly evolving challenges shaping the future of intellectual property law, including EU trade mark case law, copyright and AI disputes, design law, domain names, genuine use, weak marks, strategic enforcement and the protection of marks outside Latin and Cyrillic scripts.

Among the distinguished speakers were Krystyna Kowalik-Bańczyk, President of the Third Chamber and Judge of the General Court of the European Union, who previously participated in the first edition of the FBE Women Leaders in Law Summit.

FBE was represented at the conference by Izabela Konopacka, President of the FBE Intellectual Property Law Commission and former FBE President.

The conference clearly demonstrated that intellectual property law is becoming increasingly central to the future of the legal profession in the context of accelerating technological transformation and the global development of Artificial Intelligence.

⚖️ The Fédération des Barreaux d’Europe expresses its deep concern following the decision rendered by the Criminal Chamber of Tunis during the night of 21–22 May 2026, sentencing lawyer and former President of the Tunisian National Anti-Corruption Authority, Chawki Tabib, to ten years’ imprisonment.

Representatives of European bar associations and legal institutions attended the hearing held on 21 May 2026 in support of Mr Chawki Tabib and in defence of the fundamental principles of the rule of law, due process and the independence of the legal profession.

The international delegation included representatives of the FBE, CCBE and other international legal organisations, among them former FBE President Dominique Attias and Aitzol Asla Uribe , President of the FBE Ethics Commission, who were present in Tunis in solidarity with Mr Tabib, his family and the Tunisian legal profession.

The FBE joined other major international legal organisations and bar associations in signing a joint statement reaffirming respect for the rights of the defence, the presumption of innocence and the commitment to international standards protecting lawyers and the independence of justice.

🤝 Full solidarity with Mr Chawki Tabib, the Tunis Bar and all lawyers facing pressure or intimidation in the exercise of their professional duties.
