ANTONIO ( Chef - Big Easy )
Front row, second from left, Staff Xmas Party 2019
Antonio was always smiling, always joking, always taking the p**s and always trying out new desserts on us, wondering if they’d work on the menu. Suzy always had a dessert when she used to pop in to the bar on Friday’s. You’ll probably have seen him up there with us prior to the gig, laughing and joking and you’ll have heard me insulting him as he left at the end of his shift!! We always called him ‘Chicote’, the Spanish Gordon Ramsey, after he wore a particularly striking Chef’s Jacket one day. He’d sing us songs that he liked from our set that we couldn’t decipher... we never got to the bottom of “me catchin’ meow”!!! Lol! He’d have us in stitches with his stories, his jokes, his p**s taking was relentless and we always gave as good as we got. Whether it was Ernie being a drug trafficker simply because he was South American or Marc being Gareth Bale, the banter was endless.
He led a colorful and eventful life coming from one of the poorest neighborhoods in Las Palmas. He played professional football for his island and even appeared at the Nou Camp facing the Brazilian Ronaldo. Still only in his late 40’s, he wanted nothing more than to play football again locally and he was desperate to be a Father.
He loved talking football with Alex and Leo, two of Marc’s sons and he looked after Sam, Marc’s other son, when he went to work in the bar. He adored my Sofia and always brought out some ice cream for her when I took her to rehearsals. We sent him a message from our Daddy & Daughter meal only on Friday just gone.
Towards the back end of last year he complained of severe headaches mainly and he went for tests. Ultimately those tests led to a diagnosis of three tumors. We all met only this afternoon to organise a fund raiser for him, scheduled for this Saturday.
No sooner had I got home I received a message from our ‘Antonio Benefit’ group that he’d passed away. We’re all shocked, saddened and left empty by his passing. I’ve shed a tear, as I’m sure we all have or will and I’ll raise a glass to him tonight. Somehow I’ll have to tell my little ‘un. Take care everyone, life’s so precious and we never know when it’s our turn. Be happy, stay safe and rest easy our mate Antonio... Chicote😢
Descansa en paz Antonio, te echaremos mucho de menos❤️❤️❤️
