CAN MORE WEIGHT MAKE YOU FASTER?

Sounds stupid. But hear me out.

I was following our U13 rider Mika in Winterberg. He’s seriously fast — around 1:45 on a track where the U19 riders are only about 7 seconds faster.

Through the technical sections I had a hard time staying with him.

Then the track opened up.

And suddenly I started closing the gap. Fast.

That got me thinking.

My system weight is around 107 kg. Mika’s is roughly half of that.

Gravity gives us the same acceleration regardless of mass. But aerodynamic drag doesn’t scale the same way with weight.

At the same speed, Mika has much less mass to work against basically the same air.

So what happens if we make Mika heavier?

We’re going to find out.

We’ll add weight low and centrally to his bike and compare runs with:

0 kg
+2.5 kg
+5 kg

Same rider. Same bike. Same track.

The theory says +5 kg could actually help him carry more speed on fast, open sections. The question is how much he gains there — and how much he loses again when things get technical.

There should be a sweet spot somewhere.

Maybe the fastest downhill bike isn't the lightest one.

We’re damn proud to be one of the brands supporting Mika and watching him get faster race by race.
Racing at this age is a team effort. His family makes the countless weekends, travelling, wrenching and everything around racing possible. And there are a bunch of sponsors and supporters helping along the way too.
But in the end, Mika is the one who has to get on the bike and deliver.
And he’s damn fast. 💜🏁

We keep getting asked if we can build custom geometry VHP X frames.

Technically: yes.

But even relatively small geometry changes get expensive quickly.

For example, changing the front triangle to get a specific reach or headtube length could look something like this:

6 hours engineering / CAD → ~€600
One-off CNC lug set → ~€1,000
Jig modifications → ~€250
Extra setup, tube preparation & QC → ~€150

So we're already at roughly €2,000 additional cost.

And that's with some pretty clear limitations.

We wouldn't design an entirely new bike. The rear triangle, kinematics, rocker, pivots, tube diameters and basic VHP X construction would stay the same.

We're talking about changing selected parameters of the front triangle within limits that we know we can manufacture and are comfortable putting our name on.

The nice thing about the way the VHP X is built is that this is actually possible without developing an entirely new frame.

The slightly dangerous thing is that some of you might actually want one.
