This Saturday, August 9th, we say goodbye to one of the performing staples of Suzhou and Shanghai, Brooke Palmer! She has been playing her Traveling Uke accompanied by beautiful voice in the area for years, and will sadly be heading back home in the quite near future, so her music family is getting together for a last show together before she goes.

So this Saturday, get your rear down to The Bookworm and listen to some lovely music and enjoy the sweet vibes of live music!

Show starts at ~9pm; don't miss!

About 1 month ago, we hosted the music festival known as Suzhoubury; this year's was as always an amazing display of Suzhou music talent, and a great day of fun for everyone, despite the constant threat of rain, police, and ice shortages.

And now, we have a video!

http://youtu.be/fCilgj_pz0c

This is a quick mini-documentary about Suzhoubury, and it is awesome! Many thanks to everyone who made it all possible!

We are working on a more full-length video as well featuring each band, so stay tuned for that as well, and share this one far and wide!

Woooo, Suzhou!

This evening at 6:30pm we will be sending off Suzhou legend and brilliant musician Jeff Arthur in style with our last Matt & Jeff concert here out on the patio. If you haven't heard these guys before you should definitely check them out tonight while you have the chance; they make fantastic music and will be sorely missed! The first two sets will be their classic duo tunes, and the last set will ramp up a bit to add in many of the musicians they've collaborated with in their time here.

Feel free to check out their album on Bandcamp at the link below, and if it rains we'll still be running it inside anyway, so don't let that stop you! See you tonight!

Every Spring, as the sun begins to shine, flowers begin to bloom, and winter coats are returned to the bottom of the closet, there comes a day when the people of Suzhou come out of hibernation and gather outside the Bookworm for a day of music, dancing, and spill-onto-the-street fun, known for years as the one and only Suzhoubury.

Suzhoubury is an all-day FREE music festival held outside of the Bookworm, and will take place this year on May 31st. It will feature the most well known bands in Suzhou, including rap-rock super-group Pyroglyphix, prolific and classic rockers The Beat Appreciation Society, warm-and-toasty acoustic indy-folk songwriter Matt Thackray, chocolate-sprinkled creativite jamsters The Surging Waves, ever-pleasant Jap-stars Dainy and the Airports, local favorites Super Wave, and a whole slew of other amazing bands and artists!

In addition to the superb musical lineup, look forward to a fantastic gathering of friends (i.e. half of Suzhou), surprises galore, a fine day outside full of fun and revelry... overall definitely a day to remember, and one you don't want to miss!

The fun starts at 12pm, and while the music officially ends at 12am, the party will certainly last long into the night. The full musical lineup is being confirmed now and will be released soon so keep your eyes out! Suzhou music!

This Sunday, 2pm @ The Bookworm, Vince Ungvary will show how the European Age of Exploration and 'discovery' of Asia is represented through the changing shape and knowledge of the Asian continent through maps from the 1400's up until the late 1700's. Sabotage, subterfuge and thievery of key geographical knowledge of Asia intensified as the potential unlimited wealth and riches of Asia became known in Europe.
Vince will also touch on some of the key differences between European and Chinese cartography and show how this is reflected in their historical maps.

Vince is a graduate in Asian Studies at Murdoch University in Australia and previously lived in China for 12 years.

Original antique maps of China and Asia from early 1600's to early 1800's,
as well as pre-1949 maps of Suzhou, Shanghai and Beijing will be available for immediate purchase by attendees after the talk. A Certificate of Authenticity can be provided for any maps purchased.

Hey Wormies, it seems that we received enough write-in votes to be included in the extended voting for Best Restaurant in City Weekend's Readers' Choice Awards! So, I implore all of you folks that, like me, love the Suzhou Bookworm to open up your wechat and scan the attached QR code, which will add the City Weekend Wechat, after which you can enter the number '6' to vote for The Bookworm and help us out!

It should take about 2-3 minutes (if you're a little slow ;)), and would help us quite a bit. Thanks so much for your help!

If you need help with the process, let me know by commenting and I can explain it; for more info, check out the following link:

Well, it's been a couple long months since we've been able to get these guys back onto our stage, as Matt has only just returned from Cambodia and SOMEONE has been hogging them on Friday nights! ;), but we're excited to get Matt Thackray and his partner-in-crime Jeff Aurthur back on stage at the Bookworm this Friday evening for a superb night of acoustic goodness! Music will start around 8:30; feel free to preview his album first at the link below. (And keep your ears out Friday for "There's a Light", my favorite of his new tunes!)
