The décor is a contemporary re-imagining of the best of Southeast Asia's colonial architecture, set in a restored 1920s Shanghai complex and designed by a partner of a world-renowned architecture firm. The central focus is a large back bar, which in turn leads our eyes to discover other key design features such as slow-spinning ceiling fans, patterned cement tiles, wood paneling, colourful flora, and perhaps for those lucky enough, a glimpse at the secret storage space below-stairs. An influx of overly serious and reserved Japanese style bars have populated the city in recent years. While technique and posturing have their place, Starling aims to break the mild by providing a warm, welcoming, fun, and invigorating environment for each guest.
