What a night — and a SOLD OUT one at that!

It was wonderful to welcome **Kerson Leong (Kerson Leong) and Philip Chiu ** (Philip Chiu) back to BIGLAKE, this time joining forces with the Philharmonisches Streichquartett Berlin (Philharmonisches Streichquartett Berlin) for an evening that brought the energy and scale of a concerto into the intimacy of chamber music.

The program took us from Avner Dorman’s Nigunim to Chausson’s monumental Concerto for Violin, Piano and String Quartet.  What a performance it was. Hearing all six musicians come together for the Chausson was a true festival highlight. We were completely blown away by the energy, artistry, and sheer musical force on stage.

Thank you to everyone who filled Wellington Music Hall and made this another sold-out evening at BIGLAKE.

A morning of medieval music, flowers, birds, and a little dancing 🌿

For this year’s IMPACT Concert, Ensemble Comtessa presented a wonderfully thoughtful program exploring flowers through the seasons, brought to life through medieval songs and the fascinating instruments of the period.

And, of course, it wouldn’t be fun without joining in for a round of Sumer Is Icumen In, proof that medieval music can still be a lot of fun some 800 years later.

Our IMPACT Concert is also an opportunity for music to support the community around us. This year’s concert was a fundraiser in support of the Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory (Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory), helping contribute to their important work in bird conservation, research, and education here in Prince Edward County.

A heartfelt thank you to Ensemble Comtessa for sharing their passion, knowledge, beautiful instruments, and such imaginative programming with us. And thank you to The Andrew (The Andrew Picton), our generous venue sponsor, for welcoming us into this beautiful space.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make music an opportunity to give back.

A finale filled with music, friendship, and gratitude.

We closed this year’s BIGLAKE Festival with an evening of double concertos  which was a particularly moving and intimate concert, with the Bach’s Concerto for 2 violins BWV 1043 being dedicated to Elissa’s dear friend, Lindy Cowan.

This season has been a special one. So much of it has been about connection: between musicians, between old and new friends, and between the artists and audiences who gathered to experience this music together.

It is always bittersweet to reach the end of a festival and say goodbye to the musical family that has formed around it. But the music and the friendships  continue. We’re already looking forward to the events ahead and dreaming about what next year will bring.

To our artists, audiences, Friends of BIGLAKE, donors, sponsors, volunteers, and everyone who makes this festival possible: thank you. Your support allows us to create and share these musical experiences, and we are so grateful to have shared another season with you.

Passing the mic one last time 🎤

As we close out the sixth season of BIGLAKE, a huge thank you to all of the incredible musicians who joined us this summer. Thank you for bringing your talent, artistry, personality, and so much beautiful music to Prince Edward County.

We hope you enjoyed your time at BIGLAKE as much as we loved having you here — and thank you for always being such good sports and humoring Michelle () and all of our social media adventures along the way. We hope you had some fun with us too!

And to our audiences, volunteers, supporters, Friends of BIGLAKE, and everyone behind the scenes who helped make this season possible: thank you for being part of it.

Two pianos. Two centuries of sound. One candlelit evening. 🕯️

Ruxandra Oancea on fortepiano and Ilya Poletaev on the Fazioli brought us Beethoven Then and Now — putting the sound world Beethoven knew alongside the modern concert grand we know today.

Ilya described playing Beethoven on a modern piano as a kind of “translation”: taking music conceived for the fortepiano and discovering how it speaks through an entirely different instrument.

Same Beethoven. Different possibilities.

Yesterday’s Candlelight Concert, Beethoven Then & Now, brought us another chapter of our BIGLAKE Learn historical series with Ilya and Ruxandra Oancea.

Hearing the fortepiano alongside the modern Fazioli offered a fascinating contrast by revealing the unique colours and character of the instrument Beethoven would have had at his disposal when writing his masterpieces, alongside the more familiar sound of the modern piano.

An insightful evening of hearing history come to life, wonderfully sponsored by EPCOR.
