The Long Weekend.

Like Mai Tais? Then this cocktail is for you.
Don’t like Mai Tais? Then this cocktail is for you!

Wtf is it? You’ll have to come check it out at Port Light on Bloor this long weekend to find out, but here’s a hint: it’s got coconut & rum in it.

Available all weekend long, or until it we run out.

Come try one tonight at the Light, and we’ll get tropical.

Who doesn’t love a milkshake when the weather warms up?

This tasty number is my entry for the It’s lighter than a traditional milkshake, has a great texture from the tukamaria (basil seeds), and let’s be real, the rum is delicious.

Named for Olaudah Equiano, who the rum itself is also named after. He was an incredibly inspirational person who was kidnapped and sold into slavery as a child, but managed to purchase his freedom and then become a fighter for all those who were wrongfully taken and forced into slavery.

If you want to whip one up yourself, swipe through for the recipe and how to mix it up.

Cheers!

Earn those chocolate eggs, too!

Maybe your weekend is full of family dinners, egg hunts, and not a drop of liquor, beer, or wine in sight.

Same mentality still applies. You get out what you put in. Earn it all.

Make time for a workout, get the fam out for a hike, or a friendly game of ball (foot, basket, or otherwise)

Whether it’s a sober weekend or not, I promise you, everything tastes better when you’ve earned it.

PS. If you feel like the Easter Bunny gives you the shaft again this year (seriously, who wants ONLY 2 Cadbury creme eggs?!?! Get your life together rabbit!!!) Then treat yourself to some sweet gear. Shop the whole dang store from the link in le bio.

Don’t OVER commit.

Don’t start a new workout plan that’s 5 or 6 days/week if it’s not realistic for you to show up for it everyday for the next 3-4 months.

Because once you start skipping a day here and there, you lose momentum.
You tell yourself it’s no big deal, you’ll get back on track next week. Then something else comes up.

Instead of going from 0 to 60, start with 2-3 days/week. Or even once per week if that’s all you can realistically commit to.

Whatever you decide, the idea is that you’re showing up for those days every week. No matter what. It’s non-negotiable. The negotiations were done once you decided how many days you were committing yourself to.

Now it’s time to honour the contract you made with yourself and do the work.

Build the habit and the momentum. If you get 3-4 months in and realize you want to add another day AND it fits into your schedule, then add it.

And if you have trouble with adherence, you can hire a trainer, who will not only guide you through an effective program, they’ll also keep you accountable to showing up for your workouts.

No question.

The satisfaction is in the work and the overcoming. Probably why people who start getting cosmetic surgery keep getting more. The immediate look feels good, but then it’s gone very quickly and you’re left with nothing, so you get more.

When you’ve earned it, fought for it, dedicated yourself to it, and put in the hours to overcome the obstacles; that’s a feeling that never fades.

Because you’re reminded of it every time you look in the mirror or hit the gym.

Those are the results everyone should be chasing.

We all know consistency is the key.

Yet for some reason, that idea is abandoned when we get into the gym. It’s all about the new exercises on social media, the best ways to lose fat, or “confusing the muscles”.

Here’s an idea: have a plan before you get to the gym (or hire a trainer who will make that plan for you) and stick to it.

Don’t try to do the crazy plyometrics Trevor is doing, don’t worry about the intense circuit Sandra has set up, just worry about YOUR plan.

Once you’ve finished that training cycle you can start a new one. And if you want some plyometrics in it, then add some in.

You wouldn’t hop in the car to drive across the country without a mapped out plan to know how to get there. Treat working out the same way. Have a plan, don’t over complicate it, and stick to it.

Nutrition doesn’t need to be complicated.

Fad diets get so popular because they have a few key rules that are easy to remember, such as: ‘Don’t eat carbs’, ‘only eat animals’, or ‘don’t eat fat’.

So, in the spirit of providing simply defined rules for a diet:
Just eat some food,
Don’t over do it,
Make it mostly proteins and plants.

It doesn’t get easier to follow than that.

You can’t know, what you don’t know.

That’s one of the reasons working with a trainer can be so beneficial. There may be things you’re not doing, or are over-doing, right now that is keeping you from reaching that goal.

Working with a qualified trainer is a great way to figure out those missing pieces and expedite your fitness journey.

The study supporting this was from the Journal of Sports Science & Medicine:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3937569/

If you’re tired of spinning your tires (probably produced by Lego), or feel like you’re stuck at a red light (6 months!!!) then it’s time to find a good trainer, and bust through that plateau.
