Special request review from my good friend Paul: “Big Wave” golden ale, from

Great packaging on these, really makes you want to bring one to the beach. Flavour is malt-forward and sweet, with a little hook of hop bitterness that catches you at the end. With an ABV of under 5%, it’s one of those light ales that would be easy to crush on a warm day mowing the lawn.

I’m used to golden ales being in the Belgian style, but this is more akin to Labatt 50 or something like that. Still, those have their place as a thirst-quencher. Overall: not bad.

As I have some family and friends who are gluten-intolerant and can't drink normal beer, I got curious this week and picked up a few cans of Glutenberg Blonde. This beer is apparently made gluten-free by brewing with millet and corn, instead of barley or wheat.

Pours a clear yellow colour, with thin rapidly-dissipating head. No real noticeable aroma. I'm bracing myself for bad flavour, but what I get is... not much flavour?

There's some corn-syrup sweetness. A quick browse of the ingredients listed on the can shows "sugar". I presume corn and millet don't provide enough natural sugars for the yeasts to bring the ABV up. There's a little bit of bitterness from hops, but overall it tastes like Perrier that had some beer mixed into it. One tallboy was noticeably more sweet than the other, which is odd. Neither were good.

Anyone know of a good gluten-free beer? I'm 0 for 1 at the moment. Wouldn't mind finding something I could share with my gluten-intolerant friends though.

From beautiful Quebec's Unibroue comes this beer, entitled "Terrible".

Now, I can usually get some intuition of whether a beer will be terrible by looking at the label, and this doesn't give me that vibe, so I'm guessing I'm losing some meaning in translation. Anyways!...

The beer is a dark-brown/black colour, with plentiful foamy tan head. Belgian yeast aroma, a little funky. Initial flavour is sweet and strong, something like plums, giving way to molasses. A touch of warmth belies the 10.5% ABV, but it’s not noticeable unless you look for it. There’s a hint of what I’m assuming are hops on the aftertaste, but this is only a very subdued herbal essence, the beer is more malty overall.

Trying to dig through language barriers, I believe this is meant to be a Belgian Quad-style ale. If so, it’s a fairly good take on the genre. Nothing mind-blowing, but a pleasant high-test beer to send me sleepily off to bed.

From far-away Virginia comes Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery Heir Apparent Imperial Stout, brewed with peppers, vanilla, and cinnamon. At 11.7%, this is a bold one from south of the border. On the sip, a heavy, pungent habanero hot-pepper flavour, fading to the more delicate vanilla paired with heavy roasted malt. I can't detect a lot of cinnamon, which might be hidden by the rather overpowering pepper flavour.

On the label, I like this concept. Sort of a "Mexican Hot Chocolate" beer. In practice though, it reminds me of Hielo del Fuego from Bell City, which I wasn't a big fan of. I've yet to try a beer with peppers in it that was well-balanced, they're just too pungent to work well. A good effort, but a pass for me. Looking forward to trying some more creative things from this US brewery though.

FAN REVIEW REQUEST

My good friend Louis Thibeau asked that I examine this one, so I did. Doc Perdue's Bobcat from Blythe's Cowbell Brewing Co. is a "West Coast Red Ale". Apparently it's named after some doctor who threatened to use his bobcat after being kicked out of a bar for intoxication. Quite a boss.

Nice blend of hoppy and malty flavours; a touch of pine and grass mixing with sweet grain. Very British and balanced, almost like an ESB, but more red and less sweet.

Overall, nothing out-of-the-ordianary, but that's sometimes okay. Rather, this is a well-executed red ale with a nice balanced flavour; a crowd-pleaser. Would serve at parties. Well done Cowbell.
