Yalda is the longest night if the year when the winter equinox happens. Since ancient times Persians celebrated this night by getting together eating watermelon and pomegranate and reading poems from Hafez,the Persian poet who lauded the joys of love and wine.
It is common to decorate a table with sweets nuts wine and of course watermelon.
