Last month, team members from our Sydney venues and Seabreeze in Southwest Rocks spent the morning cleaning up some of our local beaches.

They did an incredible job, picking up a significant amount of rubbish, and we are immensely grateful to them for volunteering their time!

Almost 5 years ago, Keri made the leap from supermarket retail into hospitality, at the time seeking a change of pace and a new challenge.

She landed at the Toormina Hotel where she left a mark as a top front-of-house team member. Her personality and drive to provide a top-quality customer experience established her connection with the community and her position as a W. Short Hospitality rising star.

Having worked across the bistro, she made the move to the bar where her passion, creativity, and flare for cocktail making shone.

When WSHG took over what is now Moonee Beach Hotel in 2021, an opportunity for a Venue Manager role came up and Keri was appointed to the role without hesitation.

From no hospitality experience to landing a Venue Manager role within a matter of years, Keri’s development and career trajectory are only heading in one direction.

Thanks for all your efforts to date Keri. We have no doubt that you have an exciting career ahead with W. Short Hospitality!

The path to venue management has a few common milestones. But it’s the twists and turns that make the journey to VM unique for everyone.

Here's Gus's recount of his ascent to Senior VM at The Glenmore:

In January of 2017, I started at The Australian Heritage Hotel as a floor boy. In no time, I developed a fondness for the venue itself but, most importantly, the people inside it.

Over the following year, I became increasingly invested in The Aussie and worked my way to a tall staff position (I always had aspirations to be in management). After non-stop hard work through the 2020 lockdown, I entered a supervisor position and then became Venue Manager in 2021.

In 2022, a position freed up as Operations Manager & Acting GM of The Australian. Naturally, I applied, but to my surprise, I landed the job! I then held the position for six months before moving down the road to The Glenmore as Senior Venue Manager.

My pathway from floor boy to VM has been underpinned by great mentors, amazing friendships, two awesome pubs and a super supportive hospitality group.

A big shout out to our General Manager of The Glenmore Hotel, Lincoln Baker, who recently hit ten years working for W. Short Hospitality!

Lincoln has spent the past decade working his way around Cumberland Street, starting at The Glenmore as a Venue Manager before moving into the GM role at The Aussie.

For the past few years, he’s been back at The Glenny as GM, running our flagship hotel like the hospitality star we all know and love.

Grab a schooner or throw on some walking shoes. There’s more than one way to help support women’s health!

This year our Sydney venues will be raising funds for Leichhardt Women’s Community Health Centre. A not-for-profit that provides affordable medical, allied and complementary health care with an aim to better women’s health in the Sydney area.

How will we make it happen?

Join us on the 15th of February for a frothy one from our ‘Karma Keg’. All proceeds will go directly to the LWCHC.

Then on the 21st of March donate and follow us as we walk from from Bondi to Coogee picking rubbish up along the way.

We’d like to congratulate Noel Larcombe on five years with W. Short Hospitality!

Up on the North Coast, Noel is our go-to guy for all things maintenance.

He’s a mainstay at our coastal venues and has been integral to keeping us operating like a well-oiled machine (literally).

Cheers for everything Noel!

SUCCESS STORIES: Nathan Pollitt

Meet Nathan, our current Venue Manager at Moonee Beach Hotel.

Nathan’s career is a great reminder of the many doors that a first job in hospitality can open.

When he was just 15, he started washing dishes at Sawtell Hotel and worked his way through a variety of different roles. After a few years, he became manager of the hotel bottle shop and eventually Venue Manager, before transferring to Moonee Beach Hotel.

After nine years, we asked Nathan why he’s never left.

“I love working for W.Short Hospitality, they gave me a pathway to grow and progress. That’s the main reason why I love what I do and why the company is so great. Can’t forget the awesome perks too!”

Thanks for everything over the past years Nathan, we’re proud to be a part of your journey in hospitality.

SUCCESS STORIES: Chloe Matthews

Meet Chloe, our superstar Venue Manager at The Australian Heritage Hotel!

After working a few different jobs across retail and law firms, Chloe landed her first hospo job at The Aussie. She stayed with us for a few years while working a second job as a Gaming Attendant and took a brief hiatus to work at an accounting firm.

Fast forward six months, Chloe is back at The Aussie (she loathed being chained to a desk) and has been promoted twice from Supervisor to full-time Venue Manager!

Chloe's favourite part of the job is the variety, “I love jumping between people-centred tasks to creative tasks and even to the spreadsheet side of things, the variety keeps me on my toes.”

We’re so proud of everything you have achieved so far, Chloe and love playing a part in your professional journey!
