My grandpa was the cook of the family. Each year we would come visit for the summer and have a long list of requests to get our fix before having to return back to our home abroad. His breakfasts, and fried okra and squash were some of my favorites.
He also made a killer gumbo. My cousin and her then boyfriend always wanted to know the recipe so they could make it too. But my grandpa always said he would only give it to them when they got married.
I’m not sure how it came about, I’d have to ask my cousin for the full story, but this secret amazing recipe ended up being a Paula Deen recipe that was easily found on the internet! It became a fun joke with the family, rightfully so.
My grandpa passed 3 years ago now. He wasn’t able to pass his secret recipe on as he planned (even though we knew his secret). But for such a special memory I wanted to make it a piece for my cousin and her now husband on their wedding day. My grandma wrote out the special recipe for me, and I burned it onto a cutting board for my cousin and her husband to keep to not only remember the recipe, but remember the smiles it brought.
It may have been a Paula Deen recipe, but his touch made it extra special and more so delicious than if anyone else could have made it.
It’s been a couple months since the wedding but congratulations to my cousin and her husband. I wish you guys the upmost happiness and best life together ♥️
