ACT Hub Canberra's home of independent theatre. We hope that you'll come and join us, have a drink at the HUB PUB and enjoy the brilliant plays we have on offer.

ACT HUB is the home of three of Canberra's most respected theatre companies, Free Rain Theatre, Everyman Theatre and Chaika Theatre Company. Recipients of no less than 13 Canberra Critics Circle Awards between them - along with many other accolades - these artists have united under the ACT (Australian Capital Theatre) HUB banner to thrill, stimulate, challenge and entertain Canberra audiences. With the generous support from the ACT Government, Canberra has its first and only venue dedicated solely to producing independent theatre. Situated in the gorgeous heritage-listed Causeway Hall on the edge of Kingston and close to the popular foreshore, the ACT Hub team will bring patrons 6 plays per year from Australia and around the world, with the aim of telling great stories while utilising the talents of Canberra's best theatre practitioners. Additionally, with the creation of HUB TOO, emerging and developing local directors and artists will have support from the ACT Hub team with curated seasons chosen from submissions. Expert assistance and mentoring as well as in-kind support will allow new talent to create and showcase their work in a low-risk and nurturing environment. As Australia's capital, Canberra deserves to experience exciting, vibrant theatre and for it to be told by the brilliant array of talent this city has to offer.

An antediluvian myth. Caught between liquid and dust.

PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK
Must close 7 November 2026

From the book by Joan Lindsay
Adapted by Tom Wright
Directed by Caitlin Baker
Presented by Chaika Theatre

Featuring Jessi Gooding, Karina Hudson, Breanna Kelly, Thea Jade, and Paris Scharkie.

It is 1900.
It is Saint Valentine's Day.
It is hot and sweltering.

Three schoolgirls and their teacher vanish without a trace.

As the search begins, the boundaries between memory, desire, country, and truth begin to blur.

Chaika Theatre’s production brings together an all AFAB cast and creative team to retell this national myth, loose threads and all.

As the cast swap between characters, a story about memory, country, repression and colonial dread emerges.

Tom Wright’s acclaimed poetic and provocative adaptation of Joan Lindsay’s classic novel reminds us that this story is as much about how we tell it, as it is about the girls, the picnic and the Rock itself.

We made this for the lost to be seen and so to be found.

On a blistering Valentine’s Day in 1900, a group of schoolgirls from Appleyard College venture to the mysterious Hanging Rock. What begins as an idyllic picnic spirals into haunting uncertainty when several girls and a teacher vanish without a trace.

In Tom Wright’s evocative stage adaptation of Joan Lindsay’s iconic novel, five young women reconstruct, relive, and unravel the events of that fateful day.

As memory fractures and myth takes hold, the line between truth and the inexplicable dissolves.

Part ghost story, part psychological puzzle, PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK is a chilling exploration of repression, desire, and the unknowable forces that shape us.

“Too many magic moments to mention, this 30 year old Off Broadway musical has stood the test of time with book, lyrics and music that prove that Love’s game of chess has not changed. There will be someone in the audience who, like an audience member in 1996 will think, if not cry out “That’s my life.”

[...] Off Broadway has come to ACT HUB with a wonderful cast of local performers and this is an opportunity not to miss. Audiences will laugh, some may shed a tear. All will see a bit of their lives performed by a cast that make every moment shine.” — Peter Wilkins, Canberra Critics Circle

Canberra has caught the love bug! I LOVE YOU, YOU’RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE tickets are hotter than your latest Tinder date. Four chances this weekend to see what everyone’s humming about.

“The 6-member cast play a total of 58 different characters and play each one superbly. To carry it off, the actors need to be somewhat over the top with characterisations, have the ability to act with their eyes and bodies along with their spoken dialogue, singing voices and movement, as well as be frantically paced with costume changes and with the ability to become an alternative persona in the flash of a second.

Amelia Andersson-Nickson, Deborah O’Toole, Connor McNaught, Sam Thomson, David Pearson and Sarah Copley possess those qualities in spades, both individually and collectively. With their many talents, the performers convey joy, frustration, sadness and humour seemingly effortlessly, enabling the audience to live, for a moment, captured within every varied emotion being portrayed on stage.” — Ian McLean, Canberra CityNews
