Wine glass R/F round funnel bowl Portrait engraved, Multi-series air twist with centre swelled knop and a conical foot 165mm tall
Engraved with portrait of Frederick 2 of Prussia, from an engraving by Robert Hancock itself taken from a painting by Antoine Pesne , circa 1758 -1760
While reasonably common on porcelain and Worcester of the 1760’s this portrait is extremely rare on glass with one in the Fitzwilliam Museum Cambridge and another in a private collection as well as 2 others on different stemmed glasses with perhaps only a couple more known to be left.
Frederick, King of Prussia spent his time fighting France he was supported and financed by England with William Pitt sending troops to Hanover and the Netherlands, following the battle of Rosebach on the 5th November 1757 he became a national hero. After extensive research it is my belief this glass was engraved in the workshop of Christopher Heady and Son, their London workshop since demolished was in the Strand and is now occupied by Australia house.
